Hiking & Biking
PostQuote from Astro: “Quote from LIhikers: “Well yesterday, Tuesday 3/9, was my first day back on the bicycle for 2021. When I left the house the temp was in the low 40s and a gentle head wind. I could feel that I hadn't ridden in months and took it nice and easy. A tad over an hour to do the 10 miles. Coming home was quite another experience, the wind had picked up and turned around so it was in my face, making riding harder. Also, being dark out makes it harder as I have to make sure to be visibl…

Water treatment
LIhikers - - Trail Health
PostMaybe the thing to do will be for each of us to carry a Sawyer Squeeze. That way if one clogs we still have another. We've been using a Kataydn Hiker Pro for years and an MSR filter before that. The thing that brought the Steripen to mind was we saw a family using one this past summer in Maine and it seemed so easy.

Water treatment
LIhikers - - Trail Health
PostKathy and I have always used a filter for our water on hiking trips. On more than one occasion we've had the filter clog leaving us with no options as we don't carry enough fuel to boil all our water and Kathy doesn't want to add chemicals to the water. I'm wondering if any of you have used a Steripen, or other UV device, and what the pros and cons of that method are.

Took a walk today
PostWe used to play hockey when the sump froze over. I never could skate well so I played goalie using a catcher's mask, a first baseman's glove, and a thick layer of newspapers duct taped inside my jacket.

PostKathy and I took our dog to the local county park for an hour's stroll. Beautiful day sunny and in the 40s barely.

PostQuote from IMScotty: “Today I convinced my wife to take a lap around the pond with me while it is still solid. It was more of a shuffle than a walk, we have to worry about our Old-bones. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/13593/ ” Were you on ice skates or walking?

When one of a pair gets a hole I throw it away but put the good one in the drawer because I'm too cheap to throw away anything with…

The Laurel Highlands Trail in PA was nice but only about 70 something miles. The C+O Canal Trail, 185 miles from DC to Cumberland, MD, was very easy walking but had a lot of history along the way to learn about. Plus resupply was super easy. Then there's the Great Allegheny Passage, Cumberland to Pittsburgh.................

Bought a new pack
PostI just ordered a new pack, one that I've had my eye on for a while. It's the ULA Equipment CATALYST. I had to special order it in the color I wanted, orange. It's listed as being just under 3 pounds with a volume of 75 liters and is advertised as being to be able to carry up to 40 pounds comfortably. Also, there are plenty of positive reviews on a variety of web sites. If we have any ULA pack users here I'd love to hear your comments, both good and bad. I'll still be keeping my current pack, a G…
