Quote from 1azarus: “...this is a baldface troll effort to get advice from AK (again...) Here's what I'm thinking for walking: Elk Pen to Fingerboard friday evening. Fingerboard to Letterock on saturday, with an ambitious loop that includes the seven hills trail, cause it seems to have a lot of view stars on it (AK suggestions???) I can't easily see what mileages are involved in this. I do want to explore to the south on saturday. Letterock to west on sunday, with a dunderberg loop similar to wh…

Quote from AnotherKevin: “Forecast is for highs around freezing, lows in the teens F, 30% chance of snow Friday/Saturday, clear Sunday. Of course we know how reliable the forecast is this far out. But it doesn't look as if we're going to get the hover-around-freezing steady-rain thing that is my personal nemesis, nor are we likely to be arse-deep in snow. Yay. Me, I'm bringing a 0 degree bag with Thermarest AND blue foam (and maybe even a piece of Reflectix). TarpTent Notch. Frogg Toggs top and …

So ... who is meeting at Elk Pen at noon? Can we even get to that parking lot? I thought Arden Valley Rd is closed in winter? Do we have a loose itinerary of where we are meeting each night. The first night is Fingerboard, correct? Are going to do Letterock then West Mountain, then Bear Mountain? Too many questions??? I'm a planner. I've done as many as 12 miles per day in about 7 hours (AT in NJ), but not sure where I fit in with everyone here. I can definitely go slower but don't necessarily w…

  • Quote: “ Mom is probably up in heaven stomping the PA polka in here combat boots :)” not exactly, she was supposed to be buried in em...we forgot Thank god 'cause she'd have driven everyone crazy and they would have sent her straight to hell ... then she'd have to deal with my dad all over again! • Quote from 1azarus: “Anybody got trail recommendations for the south and north sections? It looks like there won't be snow on the ground, so actually covering some trail is an option. What is the suffer bear mountain trail like? Can we get on Iona island? Does your mother wear army boots?” I've only done a portion of the S-BM last winter to Big Hill Shelter -- we stayed overnight. There is a water source not too far behind the shelter ... maybe 1/4 mile. I pulled out my Harriman book and maps, I…

Unfortunately I have to carry tampons for ... well you know what. gif.002 But they are multi-use? I've been hiking 4 years, mostly in the Smokeys and everything I know was figured out on my own. Thanks for all the help and advice. • I have two questions & one offer ... 1. I have my base layers, hiking layers & camp layers. What should I use for rainwear if it should rain? Will my frogg toggs work as a rain cover for me? It's what I used in the Spring when it rained. 2. I don't have snow shoes but have crampons. I plan on bringing the them, but I don't want to be postholin'. Is there another option? If the snow is too deep, I'll probably bail I have a 7 passenger mini-van if for shuttles if needed. I plan on going Friday - M…

Quote from hikerboy: “sounds like a really nice way to break in to backpacking.the empowerment you felt only grows with time and becoming completely at home in the woods, knowing you dont need more than what's on your back to be happy. one of the cool things i saw on my trip was watching a lot of newbies, who started out at springer, tentative and unsure of what they were getting into, and watching them grow more confident with every storm they hiked through, knowing theyd be able to do it again…
