  • Quote from Rasty: “The only vapor barrier liner I use is a couple of emergency bread bags for my feet. ” I use those regularly with my touring ski boots. Bread or oven bags do not wear out as fast when skiing vs hiking. I've been using exam gloves on my hands for particularly cold days. For my core? I differ with Andrew. I prefer ventilation when I am moving. Check this website out as it some interesting ideas. I skiied to work today at -1F wearing a 100 wt fleece and a base layer for my core. M…

  • Quote from meat: “I'm gonna look for those, I assume they're pretty durable if it's for a tree with millions of tiny dried up knives waiting to stick ya...good find! ” wish I could take credit for that idea. It was a backcountry ski patroller who instructs avalanche safety classes who gave me this idea. I learned this...oh, ~15 years ago. Most of my best ideas are 'borrowed' from others.

Quote from TrafficJam: “Don't get too anxious for it to be over, you might settle for less. It is a tactic to drag it out and frustrate the other party until they give in. Edit..have a friend who's going through this and that was her lawyer's tactic and it worked. ” My lawyer is suggesting much the same thing. I am going for part of the ex's pension, conducting a financial audit (see above about expenditures for the cult) and doing a vocational audit (we feel she is working below her income pote…

Quote from chief: “mags, please accept my apologies, i was being flippant at your expense. i thank my lucky stars i was married and divorced in a state where the judge was free to make a fair settlement. ” No apology needed. Thanks for letting me put down my thoughts. The court date is in May. I am hoping we can negotiate something before just so I can move on. Her lawyer is young (maybe 30) and has a slate of volunteer work with women's rights groups on her resume. I'm afraid she's a crusader a…

Quote from chief: “yikes, an educated woman seeking/expecting alimony. somebody pissed her off? ” I don't want to turn this into a pity party for Paul, but since you brought it up... Colorado law by default for short term marriages of 37 months or more is that the alimony is calculated for 40% of the gross of the monthly income minus 50% of the gross of the lesser income a pro-rated time. In our case, the math works out that she is entitled to 25% of my NET monthly income for 16 months. :O The k…

  • Quote from max.patch: “interesting. i've never considered reusing med containers; i like that idea. ” Yep. With adult diabetes on the rise, these test strip containers are unfortunately east to acquire now. :O A geocacher friend of mine told me about them Work well for many different other things, too You can buy them in bulk on eBay. re: Emergency shelter An inexpensive, light (4 oz) and large emergency shelter is readily available this time of the year - Christmas Tree disposal bag. $2 or so a…

Quote from meat: “Quote from PaulMags: “Adds a certain flair for sure. The hat, of course. ” I'm assuming that would be Mrs. Mags ” No Mrs. Mags at this point I'm afraid. Well, technically there is. Once we negotiate the alimony and sign the paperwork. Why a woman with a masters degree, no kids and no debt who chooses to work a low paying government job in the Denver-metro area work environment (around 3% unemployment!) needs alimony..well, that's another story... and why my lawyer and her lawye…

  • Most backpacking in the Western US is dispersed camping. Officially. But there are always obvious sites people use with fire rings, packed down dirt and sometimes even make-shift log furniture. I try to avoid these very obvious sites as that is where bears and other critters tend to go! When car camping, getting a dispersed site is often a very good option, too.

  • Something I have on me everyday and always bring into the back country. p51.jpg Tighten poles, scrape ice out of ski bindings, open packages...and open cans of Hatch green chili!

  • Quote from IMScotty: “I must be doing everything all wrong. I am not beyond bringing cans of food on a short hike. Nothing like some baked beans in the bush. I use a P38 to open them, however. ” To answer a question above, I bring a P51 (hence the mustang). The bigger brother of the P38. Part of my repair kit in winter and, as with IMScotty, I'll bring canned food on occasion. Hatch green chillis specifically! I always have a P51 on me. Neat little tool even in every day life. Quote from TrafficJam: “ I have two merino, long-sleeve shirts and they both had small holes in them within the first few months. Has that happened to anyone else? ” I love how merino wool adjusts to the temperatures well. More forgiving of sweat I find, too. What I don't like is how merino wool is not durable at all. I've gone back to synthetics for that reason. Too much money for what is just underwear in the end. I think it is telling that Patagonia makes their merino wool as a 20/80 synth/wo…

re: Under appreciated National Parks list Not sure what that criteria is either..but I have been to two of them on the list. travel.nationalgeographic.com/…ed-national-parks/#page=1 Colorado National Monument is a little gem. I'd would not be surprised if it made into a national park at some point. The Black Ridge Canyon Wilderness adjacent to the park is drop dead gorgeous. Lots of local politicians want national park status for the CNM and surrounding BLM land, too. So enjoy it while you can. …
