  • I will be taking my vacation time before I leave to get another trip in at the adirondacks and knock out another 46'er or two and I have Been training on the treadmill with my full pack on 30 degree incline so I still maintained leg muscle through weightloss. I do like the idea that I will have time to get some day hiking trips in around here In that month since most trails open up around mid march =]

  • Well originally decided to do thru-hike nobo. Then turns out my employer may be willing to work with me if I am only gone for 3-4 months...alright that is a good alternative to having to up and quit. Tax returns were gouged this year and funding is lower than I had planned for and will be receiving later than had planned for. So instead of rushing off at the end of march looks like we won't be able to leave until mid April-may. We are considering a section hike preferably half of the trail if we…

  • I only bring one bra/slingshot I was just giving example of different necessities without getting too in depth. I bring two sets of socks because I have this bad luck of Lways stepping in a puddle. The spare is for sleeping with, and you're so right! Rocks and roots scare me more than anything when hiking, oh and leaves when you cant see the trail so pretty but not quite as pretty when ya take a tumble unupy7et.jpg

  • I only bring these things when I'm expecting or dealing with the female issues that men so readily don't want to talk about. just so happens I have horrible planning skills and luck when I schedule a vacation lol. At least I can prove that it doesn't attract bears afterall! Quote from TrafficJam: “Quote from Tuckahoe: “Quote from Bekki: “Wouldn't sleeping with your food attract bears to your tent? That is why I am not comfortable with that idea. I will be bringing my hiking kitty along with me a…

  • Quote from Mountain-Mike: “If you do bring your cat it could be a negative weight issue. Not much need for food for it & charge a protection fee if you sleep in a shelter. A snickers bar per person seem reasonable to me for mice protection gif.014” Lol genius! he's a savannah cat so should get pretty big. I was actually thinking the last few months on the trail I might invest in one of those harness/dog packs lol make him carry his own food and water maybe pawn some more weight off on him heheh

  • In my opinion mini bear are far worse they have been known to drop from trees to try and knaw through your Pack if your not paying attention. Little devils nothing scares them. At least they don't scare as easily as a curious actual bear. In Allegheny, ny near my house bears are all over. Boar too but not as common as bear. Last year there was a bear ripping off the siding of a camper I try to get inside because of the food. I've never eaten or kept food near where I sleep. For fear of something…

  • Thank you blood mountain I forgot. and I plan on hiking right through there instead of staying in that area. Thanks for the tip, and better yet its 15$ less than the canister would have been. He was looking at the exact one we was in the adk's the one they replaced the not so bear proof canisters with,( they knew how to open the old ones) ill read up on reviews but the white sac with aluminum liner is at least half the weight of a canister, not sure if we would want the aluminum or not. Those sc…

  • "Just bear in mind" I see what you did there lol. I will be on the AT and I believe there really isn't anywhere canisters are required. At least areas I can't just hike through and not worry about it. And how do ursa sacks hold up to the vicious mini bear. those deadly chip n dale chipmunks that seem to chew through anything. I'm looking for balance between resilience, weight and practicality. And if I woke up to bear breath in my face and my tent ripped I would do a little more than scream bloo…

  • Wouldn't sleeping with your food attract bears to your tent? That is why I am not comfortable with that idea. I will be bringing my hiking kitty along with me and I know the food can be quite potent smelling. Every time we've had to rent a bear canister I wind up carrying his extra weight to balance it. he wants our weight to be fair. Even though he has this habit of packing extra things we don't need and my extra things are female necessities. Example the underwear he can skip but I can't. The …

Ok so the boyfriend is on the verge of buying a bear canister because welp he felt they were so useful in the adirondacks against the mini bear. I have always hung my bag in a tree (it's a fun game to entertain after a long day hehe). I have never had the blessing of meeting a bear face to face. and luckily mini bear haven't made their way into my bag. The canister is sturdy but sooo heavy. I'm stuck his weight becomes my weight and I've already done so much work whittling the weight from previo…

Adirondack Loj feels like scout camp for adults the first night we drove in and were surrounded by trees, you look up and see all mountains. Mmmm heaven. No neighbors in the campgrounds the next campsite nearby you couldn't even see through the trees and couldn't hear any noise pollution. Oh and by our surprise there was a conplimentary pile of kindling. So we took what we needed for our small fire and left a good amount of wood for the next campers. Gotta share the love. This campsite felt 3-4 …

I know about ziggy. That's part of why I wanted to do it. And keep a video blog along the way. and if you're referring to me he's a savannah cat so a bit of both, deeply hooded ears and heads a little too small for their body, kinda like a serval. They get big.

Wow that's perfect haha. I'm sure I'm not the only person who deals with a lot of people who think you're nuts. I swear I just had this conversation with a coworker the other day. He asked me where we get water, "so are there spigots along the way then? And what if you run out of water between spigots?" Um what? A creek or stream.... What about food do you actually take 6 months of food the whole way? and what no way you actually dig a hole to go to the bathroom? this guy is in his 40's I think …

Haha no he can't. And yes he likes mice, he is a savannah cat and by the looks he's gunna be a big boy. Luckily he won't be much larger than an average cat until about month 5 on the trail. At that point though hell be used to the everyday hiking and if necessary will send him home. he's a ball of energy and loves to keep walking and running. I've even turned the treadmill on and he's walked on it hours. he thinks he's a dog. Have you guys heard of anyone taking a cat on the trail aside from tha…

before I had gone on the strict diet I am on I was training everyday on treadmill with my pack on. It has an elevation mode. I eat more when I hike and pack pack day hikes are usually trail mix and jerkey so we can keep moving. breakfast is a granola bar and lunch is some chicken and apple. I keep goo on hand because I had almost fainted due to heat stroke a while back on a day hike and had only consumed 400 calories before being out hiking the trails for 6 hours. Not sure of the distance it was…

The advice on here is phenomenal! I have thought about a leapfrog. I am still deciding on it, I do hike and I have been on backpacking trips day hikes etc on the adirondacks with and without my parents. They rush and then get exhausted and then I always seem to find my stride and pass them enjoying the burn the whole way.,the times I have packed it has been with 60-70lbs of weight it apparently takes practice to get that pack weight down but have the necessities. and I love that exhilarating fee…

Alright so I will be leaving for my thru-hike NOBO on march 25th. I am a little burdened by family trying o discourage me from going but I have my heart set on the trail. I have seen so many wonderful stories about those who had severe health issues completing the trail. people of all walks of life every color shape and size. I have Been planning for a year now. I feel that I need to rediscover life, savor each day and recalibrate everything. I have anxiety issues primarily fueled by my father. …
