  • Quote from max.patch: “wow. ya gotta read this statement from the ATC. spoiler alert - this was no joint project between the ATC and BSP! appalachiantrail.org/home/comm…-of-research-and-analysis ” Hmmm...One person makes a statement..person fires back with another statement. Sounds a lot like a divorce case....

The beauty of quilts and semi-rectangular bags both is that it is easier to layer to extend and just the temperature ranges.

Quote from max.patch: “wow, didn't know hi tec boots were still around. ” Yep the Altitude (up to version 5 I believe) is still around. I have my pair (version IV) on right now. Use them for my daily walking commute in this slushy weather. At ~$100 a pair, reasonably priced. Dick's and similar mainly sell them. You can often find them on sale for $75. Some version IV's still around. Not sure of thefunctional difference between the two other than the uppers look to have slightly different constru…

Quote from IMScotty: “I mostly use them as daily wear in wet slushy weather, snow shoveling, and for the MLK weekend hikes. Timberland is probably not the first thing people think of for hiking boots, but I have been very happy with mine. ” I use my HiTec Altitudes in a similar manner. For around town or slushy/muddy day hikes, they work. Use them for trail work, too. Still a place for leather boots in the footwear quiver.

Would a semi-rectangular bag be a good compromise? Not sure of your budget, but both Feathered Friends and Western Mountaineering make warmer (25, 20 and even 10F) semi-rectangular bags. More spacious than a mummy bag, but not quite as odd to use for many as quilt.

  • Quote from JimBlue: “Those tents look like WW2 squad tents. ” They quite possibly are these type of tent or close enough. The flood happened in 1927. The government probably used WW1 surplus tents. Esp in the early years of world war ii, a lot of ww1 type items were used. Canvas tent technology is pretty stable overall.

  • Quote from Some white guy: “I had to listen to the original after hearing their version.. ” The original When the Levee Breaks? It ain't Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin is arguably the most successful cover band EVER! youtube.com/watch?v=swhEa8vuP6U

  • Quote from max.patch: “somebody likes the guy. this vid has 1,500,000,000 views. that's billion with a B. click it. you've heard it before. unless you live in a cave. ” OTOH, 36 MILLION packages of Twinkies were consumed in 2011. Doesn't mean they are good.

Quote from chief: “Zepparella? Shouldn't this be in the joke thread? ” Did you listen to the cover at all? An amazing band. The drummer would do Bonham proud. The lungs on the lead singer is amazing. The slide guitar work is phenomenal. And the bassist does what all good bassists do: Keep the song chugging along without being noticed. Not a joke.

  • Quote from meat: “Quote from PaulMags: “youtube.com/watch?v=xH-_9cwdLug ” That was damn good! ” I thought so, too. Amazing.

  • Quote from jimmyjam: “I've seen people use a space blanket as a ground sheet- kind of the same effect. The blanket inside an X-lite works so so. I add a 1/8" foam mat on top of mine in the fall. ” A windshield sun visor works well. A bit more durable than a space blanket if you use it for multiple outings. I use one for winter backpacking.

I plan being in Nebraska Panhandle for this event. Most Coloradoans are heading to the Casper area. In fact, I heard the county campgrounds are charging $100 for the festival Caspar is putting on. :O eclipsecasper.com/ I'd rather go where there are less than 2000 people in 2000 sq miles.

  • Quote from TrafficJam: “In what conditions do you use the bread bags? ” For me? ~10F +/- and below seems to work for day use. If I am doing an overnighter, I always use them as my socks will get damp.
