Apex vs Down?
PostSo I have two quilt sets, 20 degree and zero degree, both are down. I see no need for a 40 degree quilt. I have taken to almost always bringing the zero degree set, not because I necessarily need it, but because it is so 'comfy' and the added weight does not mean that much to me. To tell the truth, I find the zero degree set toasty to only about 20 degrees, and then below that temperature I am definitely adding my puffy, wool beanie and thermals into the mix. Like OMO, I will often pull my quilt…

Apex vs Down?
PostI also was hoping someone would have first hand experience with Apex. I've always been a down guy but I'm sure the synthetics must have improved over the years.

Hello MDB1, and welcome to the Cafe. Your plan sounds perfectly reasonable to me. You have a nice moderate stretch south of Harpers Ferry to get your trail legs on. As long as you maintain a reasonable pace and don't take too many zeros, you should reach Springer sometime before the end October. A Fall finish in the southern mountains should be beautiful. Probably plenty of NOBO's to give a brief hello to at the start of your journey, but later on I bet there will be a handful of SOBO's that you…

Knead Bread
IMScotty - - Trail Chefs
PostQuote from LIhikers: “and there's nothing quite like home made bread right out of the oven ” My wife has been baking me a weekly loaf of Anadama bread for the past few weeks. Anadama bread is a New England specialty. I love it! Kathleen is a Long Island transplant, but after 30 years I think she has fully transitioned to become a New England Yankee Welcome to the dark side.

Hello All, For several years now I have been picking away at the northern half of the Long Trail (the non-AT portion). Usually just one weekend hike a year. Well, I finally finished the top half. Saving the rest for another day. Figured I might as well finally publish my Trail Journal. There are twenty entries if you are having trouble falling asleep tonight... trailjournals.com/journal/entry/395503 Scott

Hiking Plans 2022
PostAstro, I think it would be fun to consider doing some hiking in Ireland. Maybe your wife would join you if it was Inn to Inn? Have you considered just doing the Collegiate Loop in Colorado? Would make for a nice two-week trip. Since you have done the AT part of the LT, have you considered just doing the northern half to finish it off. Scott

David, I like your plan. It looks doable and has some benefits over the conventional thru. Of course, once you start hiking, things will come up and adaptations made. That is part of the fun. I especially like that you plan your finish for Katahdin. That will be the perfect cherry on top to complete your hike. Good luck!

Yes, OMO. I believe it was National Geographic that had a great article on these a few years ago. A rare happy bit of news.

Took a walk today
PostYou might notice the tagline at the end of my posts is a quote from John Greenleaf Whittier. Well, the hike we took yesterday was 'Whittier Country.' He wrote a poem about Deer Island shown in the previous post. So after the walk, we decided to make it a Whittier themed day. We visited the family homestead where he was born (in Haverhill, MA) and the home where he wrote most of his works (in Amesbury, MA). And we visited his very modest grave... appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/1417…

Took a walk today
PostUnbelievable to still have colors like that in November. It has been a beautiful fall. Took a walk this weekend with my wife. More of a bike path, about a 2.5 mile loop. I've always enjoyed this view of 'Deer Island' in the Merrimack River (Mass.) when flying by on I-95, so I wanted to finally enjoy it at a walking pace... appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/14174/
