PostI think the question should be worded "When does overnight camping season typically end. If I understand correctly, you can climb Katahdin in the winter (unless the trails are closed for other reasons) as long as you can get in and out of the park in a single day. You have to be a beast to do that. though.

Quote from StalkingTortoise: “Great... I just found out that I'm headed to Bethel VT next week. I'll get to welcome spring one more time then come home and mow my lawn for the 6th time this year. ” The snow is melting fast. I am sure it will be gone in the valleys by next week. You should still be able to ski the glades at Killington, though.

My Eclipse photos are garbage, but here is a report on my trip... appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/16534/ With forecasts of clouds coming in, I bailed heading to my preferred spot in Burlington, VT on the shores of Lake Champlain. First after driving through the night I arrived in the large (for VT) town of Newport near the border with Canada. But I was not feeling the vibe there, and left searching for someplace more rural. I found it in the tiny town of Westmore. This field slopes…

Been watching VT weather all day. I am unsure what to do. High clouds are expected to arrive in Burlington, VT right at peak eclipse time. Not bad enough to ruin block the sun, but may make the corona harder to see. Still will be clear further east, but the beautiful shores of Lake Champlain was my preferred destination. Thinking of Colebrook, NH now. Not as ideal of a destination. Too excited to sleep tonight (same thing happens to me before a big hike). I'll leave about 2 AM and decide on the …

Yes, I do understand the small VT towns not wanting 100,000 flatlanders showing up and then needing rescue services from their all volunteer emergency services. I had some thoughts of climbing Camel's Hump for the eclipse, but they have closed both access roads to 'locals only.' I will probably end up on the shores of Lake Champlain.

Earthquake
PostLI Hikers, I felt it all the way here in Boston. About 10:25 AM I felt my chair moving. Went out into the hall, "Anyone else feel that?" "Yup, was that the wind? Nope, had to have been an earthquake.'" I knew for sure when I tried to log into our local Geology station to see the seismograph (BC's Weston Observatory) and their server was too overwhelmed with requests to reply.

Quote from odd man out: “weather is looking a bit better in Indiana than Ohio, so I may go that way. It's the same distance so I can decide at the last minute. If I miss this one due to clouds, there will be a total eclipse in my backyard in 2099. ” That is exactly why, although I have been looking forward to this and planning to see it for several years, I made no reservations anyplace. Flexibility is key.

PostWell the Red Sox won their opening day game against the Mariners. I might as well enjoy this bright moment in the season. I am not expecting there to be many for the Red Sox this year. They did nothing in the off season to improve from last year's last-place finish. Owner John Henry has closed his wallet.
