Here is the first graph (hopefully, if I did the attachments right) showing the number of nobos per day that have signed up for the voluntary thru-hiker registration. The chart is current as of about 10 pm yesterday, and includes just over 250 nobos. We've had about 75 more registrations come in since then.
Sorry to distract from the sock conversation. -
thanks for the update laurie. this could be a valuable tool ,
are you encouraging "non-traditional" hikers to register as well from their starting points ,i.e harpers ferry? if people see numbers increasing for planned flip flops, it may encourage more to do the same that would otherwise feel they may miss some of the social aspect.
its darn toughs for me.its all good -

I was surprised that the Spring Equinox didn't have as big a spike as the other traditional heavy start dates. Probably cause it's just a bunch of old crystal-laden hippy/new-age/wiccan practitioners, who dress in hemp and Birkenstocks with canvas packs, and backpack guitars who show up on that date. Dog knows they're not going to plan ahead... Or register.-

I was there on the Spring Equinox on '12, and it was a complete circus, We heard there were over 100 in Springer Shelter area that night, and the parking lot was packed with hikers heading north. Shelter areas north of there were way beyond capacity.-

Cool, but I'd really like to see a picture of you...
in a shelter, with a dog, .38 in your waist, leaning on some hiking poles, drinkin' a beer, taking a selfy with a ithingy while listening to some thru-hiker playing some Dead on a guitar.
...ok forget the ithingy, that's just to much to ask a body to do, just use a camera on a pole. -

How to load pictures into a threadSometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.

If it was a .45 then five is enough. With those 9mm you may need more.Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.

As a certified bureaucrat, I've been kicking this idea around:
ATC should adopt the AT Passport program, and make it mandatory for all who intend to apply for 2000 miler certification. Then require mandatory attendance at an ATKO where hikers will earn stamps for attending mandatory LNT Awareness Training, Bear-Bagging and Cat-Hole Digging training, backcountry ethics, and BSP rules and regulations. Pack checks will be conducted by the Mountain Crossings sales force.
In addition to the spring ATKO at Amicalola, there will be summer ATKOs for flip-floppers in Harper's Ferry, and in Monson. To avoid ATKOs causing bunch-ups on the trail, permits will be issued with start dates. Trail-runners will be deputized to enforce these dates. Hikers attending an ATKO with a delayed start date, will be bussed off to do trail maintenance under the supervision of Bob Peoples.
"Sir Packs Alot" will be contracted to run and administer all ATKOs. Probably as a subcontractor under one of Haliburton's no compete contracts.
Those providing hostel and shuttle services would be "encouraged" to give "thru-hiker discounts" to only those in possession of a passport - Or risk being delisted in the "AT Guide and "Thru-hiker's Companion." All "Trail Angel" hiker feeds will be allowed under license only. Trail Angels will be required to see a hiker's passport before providing any food or beverages. Or risk loosing their license.
The completed passport will have to be submitted to the ATC along with any application for 2000 Miler certification. No tickey, no laundry. Anyone who wants theirs back must include a SASE.
Those of us with known social media trolling skills will be employed to help foster a hiker culture that loves their passports the way Camino hikers love their credencials, and that despises hikers without one with the same degree of disdain that thru-hikers to date have reserved for yellow blazers and section hikers.
How can we make this proposal stronger?

I suspect ATC and Sir Packs A Lot will prohibit attendees from bringing any alcoholic beverages on the ATKO grounds. Beer will be sold by authorized, licensed vendors who will check the purchaser's ID. They'll stamp your passport too.-

Yep, yep, yep, yep. Now I know what you're talking about. Same thing that's been going on for years. A friend of mine has spoken there the last couple of years.
