Alight, so it's not on the A.T. But whatever.Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

Probably a correlation with higher volume of outside dogs in the south due to the warmer year round weather. More outside dogs leads to more dogs going astray (even if same percentage as in the North). The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

Around here there are leash laws. Dogs don't get to roam free.

This is close-in suburbia. Population density several thousand per square mile. Downtown Boston is ten miles away. Two major highways within 1/2 mile of here. Different rules. -

What is it with the stray and abandoned dogs down south? This was an issue for me in 1990, and continues to be an issue today. I've seen similar stories in many journals.
The answer I got from rescue organizations is that people in some parts of the south just don't bother to spay or neuter their dogs. So a lot just end up being abandoned. A lot of the dogs I've come across for adoption in CT are dogs that have been brought up from the south by groups that believe they will have a better chance of getting adopted up here.
These dogs are often dumped in out of the way places such as the places that the trail passes through.Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them. -

I never understood why people will keep dogs, cats and various other vermin in their house. Guess they get used to the smell. Walking into their front door is like walking into a stockyard.
