It still amazes me the number of people that head out on a thru that have never been backpacking before. They have to go out & buy all new gear $$$, then save for the trail. Then quit after a few days. They were warned about the early start in numerous forums. Is it the walking & camping they didn't expect?

actually, the miracle is that a few t-ball players actually do make the majors... at least a few.kick out the jams, bunny rabbit! -

thats a false statement. while i don't disagree that the more experience one has the greater the chance for success, the fact remains that every year someone who has never backpacked a day in their life shows up at springer and successfully thru hikes the a.t.2,000 miler -

well i agree. the ATC needs to quit promoting thru-hiking. it's no way to really enjoy the woods -

i read on fb this morning about a couple who just aborted their thru hike. the only details they gave was that 1) they concluded that a thru hike just wasn't for them, and 2) they got off before woody gap (mile 20).
everytime i read someone like this i wonder if the outcome would have been different if they had waited til mid-april or so. crappy and cold weather makes everything seem worse than it is.
i dont think most people have any idea what to expect with weathr n march, they assume because its the south it should be warm already, forgetting mountain weather can be pretty fickle
its part of the reason i decided to start later this year.especially with almost no shelters on the bmt ot get out of the weather, i figured april 10 made more sense, and gave me more time to raise money.
