My plan right now for the 2024 eclipse is to drive to either Jay Peak in VT or the shore of Lake Champlain north of Burlington, VT. I am very concerned that in April the weather may suck.
The eclipse falls on a Monday. I'm not willing to take more than one day off, so that makes the circle I can get to pretty small

I drive a Honda Element becasue it's just about the perfect vehicle for outdoor activites. I have a 2011 which is the last year they were made before they were discontinued. I'd buy another one in a second if they still existed. Anyway, there are legitimate looking articles (clickbait!) all the time that Honda is going to bring back the Element. So I appreciate the effort that went into this:

The Honda is extremely practical. No carpet, it has a hard rubberized type floor that is super easy to clean. The seats fold down to make a bed (I sleep in mine when driving cross country or at a trailhead), fold up to get out of the way, or can be totally removed for even more room. The floor is totally flat when the seats are out of the way so you can haul an incredible amount of stuff. It has a tailgate like a truck and I sit on it at the beginning and end of every hike. Honda designed the car for 20 somethings but the main buyer was adults in the mid 40s. Like me.
This is obviously not limited to just Hondas, but satellite radio is a gamechanger on cross country drives.

I have that exact same doggie ramp. Our 95 pound dog liked to LEAP out of the back seat of my F250 4X4. Until he hurt a paw on landing. It took a trick to get him to use the ramp but now he waits for me to deploy it. the trick was he wanted to still leap off the seat. Fold up the seat which forced him to the floor where the ramp was laying. DING-DOGGIE-LIGHTBULB!
I have an orienteering buddy who always gets the F250 LX model, with the rubber mats. he uses that truck in his house rental business and says after tracking in mud while replacing water heaters in rentals in the rain, easy to just hose out the cab (has the plastic seat covers also).Pirating – Corporate Takeover without the paperwork -
I'll probably be replacing my car in the next year, if the Honda Element were still a available I'd get one in a heart beat. I'll have ask the local dealer if they know anything about it coming back. I presently drive a 2002 Subaru Forester with over 433,000 miles. I'd drive it anywhere in a quick second. The only reason I want to replace it is that to pass the NY emission inspection takes some "special" action.

My dad was a general contractor and in my teens he built a skateboard park. For promotion even during construction the owner drove a VW Thing that was colorfully painted as advertising.
Definitely made an impression on me. Sort of like a street dune buggy perfect for south Florida weather. Of course quit making them long time ago. And any still left are probably owned by survivalist. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

Astro,
On one of my PCT section hikes (at Donner Pass I think) I stuck out my thumb to get to town and got picked up by a 'Thing.' It was in pristine condition! I guess that California weather is good to cars.
In the early 1980's I had a job that took me to Martha's Vineyard quite a bit. At the time 'The Thing' was a very trendy 'island car' to have for among the summer home elite. Even though most of The Things would have been just 5 - 10 years old at that point, they were already 'Rust Buckets'. I doubt any of them have survived down there in that salt air.“Of all sad words of tongue or pen,
