Made me happy that 'Second Chance' found love on the trail. When he had to lay down on the trail at mile 3 from Campo in the middle of the day unable to go any further, I did not think anything good was going to come from his hike. But he kept at it, he grew as a person, he shed some weight and baggage, and he found a friend.“Of all sad words of tongue or pen,

I hope this picture of Max Patch from reddit is photoshopped. I was the only person there when I walked thru on a weekday mid morning.
And the picture was obviously taken by a drone, which isn't allowed...

Most of us probably got the ATC email yesterday about the IPhone app that converts your daily steps into where you would be on a thru hike of the AT. $5 "donation". Not available for android.
I mention this as I got an ad in my FB feed today about vitually hiking the 1,968 mile AT. $30 and ya get a medal when you finish. Double that to add a T-shirt. Personally, I'd be frustrated if my "thru-hike" ended at Rangely. It's been awhile since the AT was only 1,968 miles.
theconqueror.events/appalachia…F7WvM4qLWp45t0w_DWUiqtkIE
edit to add: Now I wondering how long ago (if ever) the trail was 1,968 miles. Today it's 2,189. In 1987 (I used a year old data book when I hiked) it was 2,134. Maybe they pulled that number out of the air? Now I'm curious enough to dig for the answer.2,000 milerThe post was edited 1 time, last by max.patch ().

Sandi,
I have been a member of the ATC for over 40 years. Your minimum membership fee has increased beyond all reasonable bounds. I can no longer afford to be a member of the ATC. I believe your organization really needs to rethink your minimum contribution level. It would be better to have many members of the ATC than just a privileged few.
Sincerely,
Scott Stimpson
I never did receive a reply, just more automated requests for money.
Back in the 1970's when I called the ATC headquarters looking for information Jean Cashin was so kind and happy to chat with me. She would go above and beyond, mail me extra information, and never asked for anything in return. I was proud to sign up as a member of an organization run by people like her. This year after all these years, I finally let my membership lapse. There seems to be a different group of people running the ATConferenceConservancy now.“Of all sad words of tongue or pen,

Even the military is reducing pack weight by up to 50%, so now you can carry up to 650 rounds.

Not a tradition, but instead of carrying a rock the whole way, if I were thru hiking, I would start at HF and stash some cash in a bag under a rock at the start. Hike to ME, flip flop to GA, and hike back to HF, and retrieve the stash so I have beer money at the end.

Looking through my AT pictures made me sad that I didn't get to finish this year as planned. But then I saw that the ATC was not recognizing any completions this year. So I guess I did the right thing, and will knock out those last 167 miles next year.
But somewhere down the road before my body totally breaks down I would like to do a thru hike of the AT also. My most enjoyable time was in 2015 when I was out for nearly 7 weeks (even if I spent the first couple weeks in a sling and hiking with one pole). It is just a great feeling when you have your trail legs. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

Your email was nicer than mine....
I basically told them that one of the political stances they took made me want to vomit and I would never again give them a single penny, and that they should go fornicate with themselves.
And no, they didn't take me off the list I still get emails asking for money......
The ATC is no longer what it used to be, or it should be.
The ATC wanted the whole trail closed due to covid. Like its their trail.......without any good reason for such. Then out of pettiness they're not giving any certificates this year to any finisher....... Or putting their name on a ......list..... Wait a minute did these people walk the whole trail what's the problem? The problem is the ATC didn't give them permission to o.......plain and simple. And like a petulant child, they're throwing a tantrum. The post was edited 2 times, last by Muddywaters ().
