I agree with Milk Man. Good for her. My son and I had the opportunity to hike Springer Mtn with Buddy Backpacker. It's always great to see young people take a interest in the outdoors and more importantly learning confidence and how to follow thru with their goals.RIAP

she seems like a great kid.would have been better if she dint have to lay claim to some sort of record, leading to a debate about "solo" hiking the at. but at least her parents aren't marketing her the way andrea is doing with buddy backpacker, and you can see the size of the pack she's carrying.they were there to help their daughter achieve her goal, not her mom's or dad's goal.buddy's a great kid too, but he's hiking his mom's hike.kudos to chipmunk on a job well done.its all good -
I think it is great, and as HB says, it is "Her Goal". Her parents are just enabling her to do it, not pushing her.
On the less serious side, did anyone feel they were being profiled with the "old bearded scary men" comment?

so facebook and whiteblaze is getting all hot and bothered about a newspaper article that is almost a year old? no suprise there.
a 15 year old that hiked the entire AT is a tremendous accomplishment. doesn't matter if her parents dropped her off at springer and then didn't see her again until they picked her up a katahdin. or if she joined one of dr. doyles "expeditions" and day hiked gap to gap on a rigid schedule. or anything in between. a tremendous achievement. period.
it also does not detract one iota from her accomplishment when someone suggests that her mother needs to buy a dictionary and look up the word "solo".2,000 miler -
She is amazing. I like it that she isn't embarrassed that she likes make-up, nail polish, and dresses. Many female hikers would never admit to that. She sounds like someone with a lot of self-confidence.Lost in the right direction.

I haven't followed this story very closely. Does anyone know what she did when she hiked through the Smokies? I don't know where she would have met her parents for the night. Just curious.Lost in the right direction.
