      Who is Jason X?
In the tenth movie of "Friday the 13th" Jason (the hockey masked psycho) was cryogenicly forced to chill out.

When future scientists found him in this frozen state the question was posed if anyone knew what was on his face, someone replied it was a protective mask for a game called hockey outlawed in 2024. perhaps it would have carried more weight if they said 3024. pretty silly writing back in 1990 sunmthin'

    • I saw all the posts today. All my ref buds are commenting. Damn straight he should be suspended big time....and then sent into the locker room with the 4 man crew!

Max is soooo right, this crap is one of the reasons I am out. I may have got up and chased him to the bench.....but the linesman didn't see the cheap shot, so he didn't respond to it. You get knocked around all the time, but that was a bush league cheap shot. This is kind of respect todays kids have..............none at all.

    • One more thing...........He assaulted a Linesman (no red stripes on his arms). The linesman CAN NOT call a penalty, he can assist the Ref in an violation of the rules, that he witnessed, IF the ref askes him. So if Wideman was pissed because 'The Ref' missed the call.....he is still wrong, 'cause he took it out on the wrong guy.

What our game really needs is for him to be banished from Hockey altogether.

About 10 years ago, I went to a local rink early. The 'Learn to skate' was out on the ice. they had mini drills set up all over, for small groups, and at intervals they switch to a new drill. Excellent method, I actually had a hand in developing that method years before.........so, in front of me is a group of 5,6,7 year olds lined up near a circle. At 1200 and 0600 o'clock in the circle were blow up dolls dressed as refs. I then observe the drill begin. The kids skate around the circle and as they pass the ref blow-up...........THEY SLASH HIM!!!!!!!!! I go to the lobby and demand that someone in charge get here and observe this.

I file a complaint with everyone. Of course they stop that drill, apologize to our association, the whole nine yards. But, I know these guys (coaches), I've been putting them in the box since they were in learn to skate. I told them right out.....this is why your teams take so many penalties, you teach them to be jerks......try to teach them how to skate pass and shoot........."oh yea, sure Mr. Monaco".......idiots!

This behavior is not exclusive to only the sport of Hockey. But besides coaches teaching kids this sort of behavior is the parents that sit on the sidelines and watch as their kids are taught poor sportsmanship. Even worse is the parents that are acting like animals on the sidelines. Coaching baseball for the past 8 years Ive witnessed parents screaming and yelling at umpires, at coaches, at other parents and even worse at 10 year old kids. It all starts at home. If a kids parents are arseholes, more then likely the kid will play like an arsehole.

    • I'm always surprised at my sisters' hockey stories. She manages a rink and drives a zamboni. She cleans up after the teams in the locker room (some have pulled the lockers down when they were pissed and peed all over the walls).
Her husband and his family are coaches and refs. Her husband doesn't take crap from parents and has ejected quite a few from the stands for being obnoxious.
      Lost in the right direction.
    • Nothing shows your kids how to act at their game then to have the police called to escort you off the field for threatening coaches and umps. Ive witnessed it too many times. We play baseball against neighboring towns throughout the county. Its sad that there is a specific town that not just our team, but other towns won't play. And its not the kids, its the parents and coaches.

    • I was working at a tourney in Bridgeport, Ct. one year. (Bridgeport, gets listed as a top 10 dangerous city in the US, often). I'm in the locker room dressing and outside I hear someone getting crazy. I look outside and there is a parent running up and down the boards screaming at the refs. He looks at me...."what the fk do you want want?"......I'm like, Dude you have to chill, the rink people will call the cops in a heart beat. F them, f you and f these shytty refs. Fine, you've been warned.

I'm out doing the next game.........at a stoppage, I see a dozen Bridgeport cops come in surround this guy, they bounce him off the glass, cuff him and drag him out. Awesome......he may drive thru Mass before he drives thru Bridgeport ever again!!!!!

I have always thought the worst thing about youth sports is the adults (or at least some of them).
Round here the kids are given a letter there parents have to sign before they can join a team. parents have to sign a "code of conduct" letter, if they act up they're gone, and there kid knows why. Not that it keeps the aholes from actin up.

I thought I saw something on my news a few weeks ago where the ref in a ice hockey match hit a player....
You did, it was a very very minor league. During a big bench empty brawl. The ref was breaking up a set of guys, the one guy is wrestling with the ref and the ref socks him.....a coach comes flying off the bench and tackles the ref......end of video.

    • Back when I was in high school my friends and I used to play hockey once the local sump froze over.
I couldn't, and still can't, skate very well so I always had to play goalie, in my shoes. I used to borrow a catcher's mask from one friend and a first baseman's glove from another, and would tape thick layers of newspaper into the front of my winter jacket as padding. During winter I always had welts, bruises and black and blue marks all over. No refs, school yard rules and we all survived and our parents weren't involved at all.

Similar perspective from Yogi Berra on sandlot baseball v. organized youth baseball. We got a whole more at bats and reps in the field on the sandlot, and learned to solve our own issues.

    • I've been a hockey fan most of my life. Spent my younger days going to every Penguins game I could and playing street hockey or ice hockey, sometimes on frozen ponds.

In my opinion Wideman should be charged criminally for cross checking the Lineman and thrown out of the league. Understood that fighting is a part of sports, but when a player gets involved in certain sports (football, hockey, lacrosse, rugby etc) there is a understanding that fighting can and often does occur. By playing that sport the player consents to this activity. However, when a Lineman has his back turned and a player, in anger, comes up behind him like Wideman did, and assaults him its a crime. Much different than two players squaring off face to face..

I agree mostly, if he was injured, yes criminal charges. He got the max without a banishment. Which I am extremely pleased with. This sends the message to young players that abusing the official WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. I feel this is a main issue with today's youth, you police know it, teachers know it and sports officials know it........ The last few generations have no respect for nothing!

    • My middle son never wanted to umpire because he did not want to deal with the parents (especially coaches) who also do not respect authority. There lack of knowledge of the rules does not in any way seem stop them from "expressing their opinions".

My youngest son's first year as an umpire had a coach overreact to him (but he stood with his call, and did not argue with him). Afterwards I was talking to him, and he said even if he had missed the call it would not have mattered if the guy could have coached better. It is a shame when during a 7-8 year old game with a 14 year old umpire and perhaps the most immature person is the adult coach.

Once read something about one reason the USA was so successful in WW2 was because so many of the soldiers had grown up on farms with tractors or had worked on cars, so when anything broke down we were much more likely to fix it or improvise than other countries.

it's a small outdoor rink so I don't hold it against them. Took the picture for my sister who manages a rink and drives a real Zamboni.
A woman who can drive a Zamboni is my kind of woman.
