Over numerous years of weekend and section hiking, I can think of at least 2 times that my husband has had to access local medical care due to injury or illness. One was near Unionville, NY. He fell and twisted his shoulder and we had to find an urgent care center. Because he had excellent insurance, our total bill came to only around $75 or so. Another time, near Grand Canyon Nat. Park, he had to see their emergency clinic due to a ruptured blood vessel in his sinuses (no, I did not punch him in the nose  ) Cost of that visit, with insurance, about $100. Very affordable. I'm afraid those days are gone.
Now, with a medical situation, you have to (1) find a facility (2) figure out if they accept your particular flavor of insurance (3) find a physician within the practice who accepts it and will see you (4) determine your financial liability for the visit (5) hope you have enough to pay up front. Heaven forbid if you require an ambulance on top of everything else.
