In the supposedly frigid north, we are at a relatively balmy 8 degrees this morning. So many people underestimate the moderating effects of the Great Lakes.

Nine below zero with a wind chill of -20 this morning. We still have school. We don't close for cold until it reaches a wind chill of -35.
Today in Texas it is "only" 12 this morning. Moderating starting tomorrow. 55 by Thursday when the next cold front hits and then Friday and Saturday highs are 40. That's our out door even at LBJ National Grasslands so we will be cold. I'm a meet official so I don't even get to go out in the woods walking about to keep semi-warm. But then I did the courses and have been to every control point once or twice already.
In our social media some people were shocked that our local schools are open today when many (Dallas, Ft Worth) are all close due to cold. People are saying "When I lived in Wisconsin/Michigan...we went to school". People are also reminding those saying that "Yeah, but you have HEAVY winter gear to deal with it. This is Texas where most don't have such warm gear".Pirating – Corporate Takeover without the paperworkThe post was edited 1 time, last by rhjanes ().

Lots of snow at my house and very cold (for this part of the country)…-1* tonight. I lucked out and don’t have to work until the end of the week so get to enjoy it! Spending my time baking, knitting, and fiddling. May try to walk tomorrow.Lost in the right direction.

I put in some Anti-Gel in my diesel truck before our arctic weather arrived. I also had it plugged in. I drove my 2008 Mustang this weekend. Today I needed to take the truck. It tossed all sorts of warnings and set the "check engine" light. "Low Fuel Pressure" "Reduced Power" and the "Need to Operate above 30 MPH to Blow the gunk out" messages. I drove it for a bit and it smoothed out and started running better, going over 30 fine. But the Check Engine light stayed on. I plugged in the code reader and the only code was about low fuel pressure. I cleared it. Waited an hour, drove it and no code set. Guess this diesel just hates cold weather.Pirating – Corporate Takeover without the paperwork

By dumb luck, I'm 2 for 2 with having a south-facing driveway. It's pretty amazing how much of a difference that makes compared to the north-facing driveways in my 'hood.
And if it's cloudy, I just crack open a can of Freon. (just kidding)
One last hint: if you have a reflective sun screen in your car, check to see if it is a dark color on the inside. Then place it inside-facing-out to have a sun magnet for melting snow & ice.Trudgin' along the AT since 2003. Completed Sections: Springer Mountain to Clingmans Dome and Max Patch NC to Gorham NH

For the first day this week the university is having on ground classes. Rode in with my wife today like I have the past few days. Should clear up enough for me to drive tomorrow. Marrying a woman from Northern Indiana has benefits for someone who grew up in South Florida and never saw snow until he was 20.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

We had our Orienteering event at LBJ National Grasslands north of Decatur Texas today. I was the course setter and was there at 8:15 AM. It was 19 degrees. My meet director was there about an hour earlier but he wasn't sure the temp then. The ponds were frozen over. We had to take a piece of rebar and hammer it into the ground before we could insert our Stakes for some of our electronic timing equipment. It was barely at freezing at 1 PM. I wore two merino wool shirts, then a nylon type athletic shirt, a sweater, my fleece and then my puffy. With a neck buff and an orange beanie. We had a canopy and tarp with a propane heater running most of the day. Our fingers were still freezing up after a few minutes of typing on the timing computer. The orienteers all did OK.
Rain due on Sunday, with freezing rain possible over night. Then rain most of next week.Pirating – Corporate Takeover without the paperwork -

Today was cloudy and dreary. But the "bright" side was it was the first day in 23 days with no rain or snow.

Awesome day in North Texas. I spent a very LONG day at Cooper Lake State Park. My buddy and I left DFW at 8. Arrived at the park at 10 and we were working on hiking, finding and tagging as many control points for our orienteering event there. Saw a number of white tail deer. We got some 30 of the advanced controls located. Even pushed out so far we were on the southern park boundary. It was a great sunny day and about 60 for the high with hardly any wind. The part of the park we are using is the "Buddy Whip" area, used by equestrians. But it's been so wet, it was very muddy and so it was closed to the horses. Which means there was us and ONE other car even in that parking lot. NO ONE around. We didn't get finished so we have to be back perhaps later this week. The event is just under 3 weeks off but the final week is for me to program all the electronic timing gear and then three of us will go and deploy it all.Pirating – Corporate Takeover without the paperwork

General Beauregard Lee, the local groundhog, predicted an early spring. He nailed it; today was 68 degrees.
Unfortunately, it appears that ALL the groundhogs around the country predicted an early spring. Just more evidence of climate change that humans will ignore. Why do the groundhogs understand what so many of us don't?

it was sunny and 52 deg (tied record high). We took the dog for a walk in the park. There were about 60 cars competing 10 parking spaces.

We were up around 40° and sunny in Southern CT, even had the 4 and 6 year old at the playground for quite a while.Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

60's by the end of the work week in SW Ohio. Then back to 40's/20's.
Next week, I drive 17 hours southwest to Austin and just might see temps in the 70's by the weekend.Trudgin' along the AT since 2003. Completed Sections: Springer Mountain to Clingmans Dome and Max Patch NC to Gorham NH

I just came in from splitting firewood. There's a high cloud cover that I'd call mostly cloudy. The best/worst part (depending on your outlook) is that it hit 51 degrees on my digital, outdoor, thermometer. I sure hope winter isn't over yet.
Matter of perspective. To me 51 is winter, and I am always hoping for it to end as soon as possible. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.
