The road to the Brasstown Bald (highest point in GA) parking lot was closed Monday becasue of ice so you had to walk...
(obviously not my picture).
Obviously you do not have to get all your hiking clothes from REI to enjoy the outdoors.

Just a dusting, which has already disappeared. But baby, it's cold outside! 10 degrees this morning.Trudgin' along the AT since 2003. Completed Sections: Springer Mountain to Clingmans Dome and Max Patch NC to Gorham NH

We did not get that much, maybe 6"
Spent the morning packing away the Christmas decorations, took down the tree, took down the outside lights.
Still have not put the boxes in the attic. I always find sometime I missed a day later, so I'll keep those handy till tomorrow.
Started the snow shoveling around 1 PM. It's not too bad. I have the foster kid out there shoveling now. He has never shoveled snow before, so I convinced it was going to be so much fun I'll take the next shift after he has gad enough. Probably finish in the dark.“Of all sad words of tongue or pen,

Skiing is cold enough without having to endure this. Beech Mountain, NC on Friday.
Apparently an out of control skier broke the water line.

6 degrees here this morning, warmed up to 10, it is 4 degrees right now.
I left the water dripping a bit in the bathroom tonight. I have a well, and the supply line will freeze when it gets this cold.“Of all sad words of tongue or pen,

The Hike Inn -- about a 5 mile hike from Amicalola Falls State Park about halfway between the Park and Springer -- has 36 reservations last night and only 7 people decided to make the hike.
I'm 88 miles S of the Springer parking lot and it's started to lightly snow at my house. Springer is supposed to get 3-5 inches today and another 1 inch overnight.2,000 milerThe post was edited 1 time, last by max.patch ().

31 degrees but it sure feels colder than that to me. I try to hike (or at least walk) every day, but I missed yesterday and today isn't looking too good.
Probably for the best; I'm ready for a knee injection and was really hurting the last mile on Wednesday.2,000 milerThe post was edited 2 times, last by max.patch: stupid auto correct ().

Pretty chilly here today (11 degree wind chill) so I checked the weather for Springer which is forecasted to have a wind chill of zero (the wind chill was minus 8 last night).
Which, if what I'm reading is true, hiking today on the AT starting at Springer would actualy be preferable than hiking the Freedom Trail in Boston.
Certainly not going to complain about the weather here given what y'all in the NE are getting today.2,000 milerThe post was edited 1 time, last by max.patch ().

I've got 12 to 20 inches of snow in our yard, depending how the drifts formed in any place. The temperature was in the teens all day with a pretty steady wind.

This is the view from my back door. It is a bit wind-swept on this side, but there is about 14" at this point. Just getting dark, still falling.
Would have been fun to go out and play today, but my wife thinks she needs to keep me busy around the house. Tomorrow will be a full day of shoveling. Will finish just in time to go to work on Monday morning.“Of all sad words of tongue or pen,

Snow all over and more wintry mix to come. Probably not able to drive until Saturday. Been working on getting at least 15,000 steps a day, but stuck with indoor bike for now. Thought about trying to walk in the snow and ice, but wife convinced me a fall at 60 is not the same as at 20.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

Sleet started overnight and lasted until this morning. Then there was a period of freezing rain which has switched to a mixture of sleet and snow. There should be some interesting stratification in the layers by tomorrow when the precip is forecast to end. We might get 8" of snow on top or 3". Supposed to get mighty cold for a couple of days.
Other than the risk of power outages, the storm got me an extra day of work-from-home along with a theoretical 10:00 AM start today. I guess that was for the essential folks who had to go into the office.
My son sent me a picture of the ice on his patio railing in Austin. Looks like Texas got it worse than Cincy.Trudgin' along the AT since 2003. Completed Sections: Springer Mountain to Clingmans Dome and Max Patch NC to Gorham NH

I walk 1.75 miles in 30 min on the treadmill every night. At 2.5 feet per step, that comes in at about 3700 steps. -

Texas got a real mix of winter weather. Remember we only get this stuff once or twice a year so are not well equipped to handle it. Here in DFW, we sort of lucked out. Forecast for Wednesday night was up to 1/4 inch of ice. That would have been major with power lines down, trees down, impassable everything. We lucked out and the freezing rain quickly turned to sleet, which is tough on roads but not trees and power lines. It sleeted all night with close to an inch of accumulation....then switched to snow for Thursday morning. The temps for Texans is tough. We have been in the teens overnight with windchill in single digits and some are below zero wind chill. With people being out and about some on Thursday, and then the temps refreeze everything, today (Friday) is about impossible on the roads. The traffic lady on the TV basically had every major road in DFW, colored red for "impassable". It MIGHT....maybe, get to freezing late this afternoon. It finally moderates by Saturday noon.
Still got power, beer, bourbon and scotch so all is wellPirating – Corporate Takeover without the paperwork -

Ugh. This was some ugly stuff to shovel. 3" of frozen crap on the driveway with 4" of light snow on top. I watched a few folks trying to use snowthrowers but they didn't really help all that much. The challenge was to scrape the frozen layer off before the temps plunge to single digits overnight. I got about 70% done before calling it quits.
My son tried to get to his clinic north of Austin today and had to turn around once he encountered vehicles in ditches. Nope. Not gonna keep going.Trudgin' along the AT since 2003. Completed Sections: Springer Mountain to Clingmans Dome and Max Patch NC to Gorham NH

Perfect weekend for getting out. We had a bit of snow earlier in the week. It was in the 20s and partly sunny without much wind. The snow was not too deep, packed but not slushy or icy. Good for snow shoes, skis, or just walking.

After sitting out the last 3 days primarily becasue of rain, I was able to get out both days this weekend and do my normal 5 mile loop. Cool enough to need a long sleeve base layer, but warm enough to wear patagonia baggies shorts. I'd say about half the people I saw wore some type of leg covering. Since I'm a wimp I waited til mid afternoon for it to warm up.2,000 miler
