Not in the Whites......Not in Texas.....or Ohio.
That was a comment on the Lakes of the Clouds Hut, VT (which is kind of a strange abbreviation for New Hampshire) ;)

Based upon the questions, I guess a theme of the AT could be many rivers run through it.

Interesting memories of this place. Summer of 2015 my longest LASH on the AT of nearly 7 weeks. So I was hiking with a lot of thru-hikers (especially after I got rid of the sling and went back to 2 poles). The guy I walked in with around lunch time wanted me go with him to a tavern, but I told I was craving a big salad and sandwich wanted to go to a healthier little cafe. Went into AT regional headquarters building for a few minutes and when I came out ran into another thru and told him where I was going to eat and he passed. Said he had been a vegetarian for a few years and was really craving meat and went to the Italian restaurant.

Saddest part is later found out that the first guy quit and went home that day. Thought maybe if I went with him perhaps I could have encouraged him to hang in there since over halfway. But in the end I know it was his decision, and all I may have done is prolong it for another day.

Happy ending for me is ended 20 mile day in Carlisle at a hotel with a hiker special rate. :)

Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

I don't want to take anything away from her acomplishment, but I can make the point that the answer they gave is actually incorrect.
Who are you thinking of? To the best of my knowledge, this was the order of things:

1939 - Mary Kilpatrick becomes the first woman to hike the entire Appalachian Trail through a series of section hikes.
1952 - Mildred Ryder, hiking with a male partner becomes the first woman to thru hike the trail.
1955 - Emma Gatewood becomes the first woman to complete a solo thru hike.

1955 - Emma Gatewood becomes the first woman to complete a solo thru hike.
First, what's the definition of a thru hike? Here's the traditional definition, taken from Wingfoots 2003 Thru-Hiker's Handbook:

"Thru-Hiker is traditionally a person who is attempting to become a 2,000 miler in a single, continuous journey by putting on a backpack, leaving from one terminus of the Trail, and hiking essentially unassisted to the other terminus."

Peace Pilgrim did a flip flop thru hike. (GA to PA and the ME to PA.) A flip flop by definition does not hike terminus to terminus. So is a flip flop a thru? Most people would say "yes" but I'm not going to argue with someone who says "no".

Moving on, but still on topic, is a pet peeve I have with the ATC. For years the ATC used to sniff and say they wern't concerned with what a thru hike was and refused to define it, concentrating only on the definition of a 2,000 miler. Several years ago that changed and they began to define a thru hike as completing the trail in 12 months or less. This is nonsense. According to the ATC definition a "thru hike" can be a 2 month hike, followed by 8 months off, and then competing the trail the next 2 months. If that's not 2 long section hikes I don't know what is.

I'd like to think that when someone says they did a thru hike we know exactly what they did, and the only possible question to ask is what direction did they travel.
