Jefferson Rock, ATC HQ, Lewis & Clark, John Brown sites what I remembered the best. Along with meeting Baltimore Jack at the Outfitter onetime, and having a short conversation with him in the ATC Hikers Lounge another time. :)

We didn't hit ATC HQ. Rest of you items was Yes we visited them. I went to 3 years HS in West Springfield VA so we spent lots of time touring around the sites in the DC area.
Funniest time was when my History Major sister was vacationing with us as we visited the area. We'd moved away some 15 years prior. Sister went up to visit our grandparents but had to leave earlier than my wife and I. We were driving her from central PA at our Grandparents, back to catch her flight out of Dulles and then wife and I would continue our vacation. We had some time to spare before her flight (well before TSA 2 hour check-in requirements), like 2 hours, so stopped at Antietam. We had a personal tour with my sister as the tour guide, but by the one hour mark, wife and I were both saying "OK...but we need to leave in 30 minutes so YOU can catch your flight". Sister "Now yes, here, this is were Confederate Captain Smith said to his forces that they must attack down the creek. Meanwhile at that hill top, Union General Smith was....". She claimed she never missed her flight. No, because the airplane broke and never left the ground. She caught the next plane some 4 hours later.

As far as I know, no. Just the second after Earl Shaffer.

No but some people say he was the first to thru hike.

Somehere on TOS is an expose from (IIRC) an attorney from PA who claims Shaffer cheated. He claims the pictures he took around Ogelthorpe could not have existed during the time he was there( wrong time of year). There's more but I don't remember at the moment. I'm banned so I can't search. That thread has to be at least 15 years old.

I read most of it years ago.
My remembrance was that Earl did the best he could. "Thru Hiker" didn't exist. Neither did very detailed maps, ATC notes, OTHER hiker notes. In 1948, there had been little maintenance since WW2 had stopped everything but the war effort. Earl's report had how he road walked around area's that were so full of blow down damage the he just walked past it on the road. IIRC the write-up had notes and research that was along the lines of "Earl had enough of trail damage and got off at Gap-A. Research shows he could have gotten back on at road crossing-2 but he didn't until crossing-4". Well, yeah, no such reports from ATC, FarOut, trail news, postings in shelters.
      Anyway.....

    • Doesn't it sort of depend on the hikers stride? A 6 foot tall hiker (How about JPD) compared to a 5'2" person....

    • First time I think I saw this one. Even if you only know him by his trail name, process of elimination should help you.

Just missed him at Bears Den in 2021 by one night. I believe my name was right after his in the log.

    • Since the ATC is attempting to change the definition of a thru hike to "hike the trail in 12 months and it doesn't matter how you do it" and there's a "hostel" at every road crossing, I'm looking forward to reaching age 84 and cheesing my way up and down the trail one more time

Not 84, but more like 64 or 67 I plain do a thru hike. My section hike was more stay in the woods a much as possible and resupply once a week to save money, and nero instead of zero. But next time I plan to do it a lot more like platinum blazing. Definitely more showers and town food. Perhaps more hostels than hotels and motels, but still a lot more comfort and ease than I did it the last time (although spread out over 10 years). :)

Yes, might as well go for the age record.
