I've also not hiked the AT. But been reading and following along for 10 years so know some of the buildings. But buildings are difficult. I often state at the photo for some background clue, like a sign.

I don't know how where you go to school or whose training program you attend can make you an entitled hiker.

But since you mentioned Doyle the first thing that struck me when I read the book is that the chapter when she started hiking is titled "Ineptitude" and she writes about her frustration about not knowing how to cook, clean, or hang her food. Yet she just finished a how to thru hike the AT course by Doyle. Interesting.

Doyle markets hinself by stating "I've hiked the ENTIRE AT XXX times". The conclusion that most draw from that is that he is a backpacking guru. I know I did the first time I heard that. Do you know how many times he put on a backpack, started at one terminus, and hiked unassisted to other termininus? I'll wait...

      Zero.

And yet he conducts a class on how to do just that.

      But enough about him.

The first example I remember is when Jen arrives at shelter, it is full of weekenders, and raining. She thought it was unfair that weekenders -- who the next morning only have to walk 2 miles to their car where they can then drive home and get a warm shower -- get to use the shelter while she -- a thru hiker -- has to put up her tent in the rain and then get up the next morning and keep walking to the next town. Unfair!

I've always rembered that passage as when I was in the SNP some weekenders arrived and started to set up in the shelter. One of the thru hikers that was already there told them that shelters were reserved for thru hikers only and told them they had to get out. I overheard this and told the weekenders he was full of schit and they were welcome to stay. First come first served.

Somewhere else in the book she admits that she felt superior to weekenders and section hikers. And as shown in the link below, it took her half the trail for her to realize that was the wrong mindset to have.

I have the utmost respect for Jen and she is one of the few "name" hikers that if I had the opportunity to meet I would certainly go out of my way to do so.

Here's what Jen herself had to say about this...

Got it, the traditional "entitled thru hiker". :)
I guess it has been over 10 years since I read the book and I forgot about that stuff (but still remembered the two other attributes).

    • To be fair the TVA does cross over into a lot of other states: NC, GA, VA, MS, AL, KY. Although only the first 3 are part of the AT.

The idea for the TVA actually came from a proposal Henry Ford had for Muscle Shoals, AL. He was looking to replicate the village industries he had done in MI with hydroelectric dams. Congress turned him down, then took his idea and ran with it on a much larger scale.

Great book by great writer, just not that much of hiker. Movie for me was a big disappointment.
I've never read any of his other works. I laughed a lot at the first half. After that, I got tired of it. He accomplished his goal, if you see that he got enough material about hiking to fill a funny book. The movie was a disappointment but I don't think the book gave them enough material to fill 120 minutes. I've wondered about the people who were, perhaps, identifiable, so probably couldn't be used in the movie. Leaving the writers 30 minutes or more to "Fill", hence we have a Rocky Mountain brown bear, and falling (safely) off a "cliff" and......

I commend Emilio Estevez who took Jack Witt's book about the Camino, wrote a screen play about a father and son and their differences and used the Camino as the backdrop. I read Jack's book after seeing "The Way" and IIRC, I found one item from the book that was used in the movie. At least without a major do-over of the event.

    • Speaking of "The Way" right now I have a friend who is hiking the Camino for the second year in a row.

He hiked it last year with a male and a female friend; after 75 miles the female fell and broke her wrist and returned home to recover. He and his remaining friend finished the hike.

She recovered, still wanted to do the hike, so about a week ago the 2 of them started again. So far so good. :)

He's doing it staying in hotels rather than hostels. I like that option.

He's legally blind but that really doesn't slow him down much.
