    • Hope it's ok to post this here. Posted to another forum (different site) and seemed like folks dug it. It's a question of the day about the AT. I've been playing for a while. Some of the questions are super easy, some not so much :)

Yes. I saw that at TOS (local jargon for "The Other Site"). I've played a few times. I get many, but not all questions. I've not hiked much of the AT yet.

BTW welcome to the Café. Your first sentence betrays your new status, as we don't have a lot of rules here. Basically, don't be a jerk and avoid political stuff. Thread drift and non-hiking posts are encouraged.

Thanks! I can avoid being a jerk and political stuff pretty well! I haven't been able to hike as much lately, so things like the stuff on Hykeroo and poking around in forums is keeping me "connected" with my favorite hobby :)
While I do plenty of day hikes ("hikes" is a stretch, more like walks in parks), it's been a couple years since I've been backpacking. I have a 4 night Grand Canyon trip planned in April. My wife is sure I'm going to die. Head over to the Hiking Plans 2022 thread to find out who's going where.

Or....this new fangled thing on this here interweb...I think they call it "Captain Google"..... (So far I've NOT had to resort to that).

So did I. I didn't go to Boiling Springs on my thru -- I was focused on getting to Duncannon and The Doyle only 25 miles away. :)

My last Wordle miss was Jan 31. I think that's 42 straight.

Taylordle was tricky today. I knew 3 of the 5 letters, but I studied the remaining available letters and I was certain there was no word that could be made out of what was left. So I looked at it a different way and realized that you could make a first name out of them. And that's what it was.

Ok, I'm a map geek. Almost nobody will get this one in one guess.
      Or even 6
I have copy of the most comprehensive English language guide book for this country.
Another one of those trips I plan but will probably never take.
But if you want the ultimate trekking adventure, be the first to thru hike it (but don't expect a lot of resupply options).

Well that was interesting. I can guarantee I won't be the first (or ever) thru hiker.

Will there be a blaze every 1/4 mile or so? :)

      <snip>

Erosion is the biggest threat to the existing trail network in the Pamirs. Every winter avalanches wipe away trail sections. In spring time heavy rains saturate the soil and cause big landslides. Our first natural barrier is a steep river bank, without a trail. The bank has essentially broken off, leaving highly unstable ground for us to cross. It’s a proper no-fall zone. One mistake on the more than 50 degrees slope and you’ll end up in the fast-flowing river, 20 metres below. The heavy packs we’re carrying add to the difficulty of the tricky traverse. One by one we tread the instable passage. Lino, one of our team members, slips and slides down and scrambles with everything he has to stop his fall. Miraculously he manages to stall and find his way to the other side. Everybody has gone a little quiet, thinking what challenges may lie ahead of us.

I got the question right becasue I said X miles which is what everyone says is the distance.

But...every "official" source I have says the distance is X.8 miles, so I always round up and tell people the distance is (X+1) miles. (But my newest "official" source is about 5 years old.) Also, the trail sign says the distance is X.5 miles but we know how inaccurate those signs can be.

Written in such a way as to not provide a spoiler. :)

I read Duncannon but my brain registered Damascus. Ug.
But I still do not believe that would be Damascus would it?
When I think of French Broad I think Hot Springs, James -> Glasgow/Buena Vista, and Kennebec -> Caratunk.
