A new book about the history of the AT was published this week. I have not read it yet.

There is an excerpt here. This part of MacKaye's story only got a couple of sentences of attention in my book (The Appalachian Trail) published a few years ago by the ATC.

I have always felt MacKaye gets too much credit, and Myron Avery not near enough. Problem was Avery worked himself to death and MacKaye swooped back in to take credit after his death.
