It never ceases to amaze me when people attempt a long trail thru hike but have never hiked.

I've been thinking recently, if I had 6 month to go hiking, I would maybe do a month or two on the he AT to get in shape and make sure I am up for it (mentally and physically), but rather than thru hike anything, I would rather move on and hike a bunch of different trails (wonderland, GC, JMT, Kungsleden, Everst Region, Te Araroa, Kilimanjaro). That would be much more interesting than thru hiking something.

Like Grandma Gatewood -- got lost on her first hike and was rescued and went home. She got better though.

Many people are successful and I think it’s great. It’s just very weird (to me) to have a dream to do a long distance hike, not knowing if you even like to hike. For me, there’s too much at stake...quit or put your job on hold, spend a lot of money on gear, spend a lot of time planning, hike for a few days or one week and realize you hate to hike or be away from home/family.
