I did, I make all my own. Under size 18, I buy them when I go on my April trip to Pennsylvania. All those guys down there are layed up for the winter, tying dozens of flies. And my 60 year old eyes just can’t see well enough, small enough! I took a short 3 class course from a local guy. 3 of us, a stone mason, me (Autobody tech), and a dentist. We made short work of each class. We went they his lessons zip bamb bomb. He was very pleased and attributed our success to the fact that our jobs were ‘hands’ and ‘detail’ jobs.
It’s fun, and it can take up a 3 day snow stormCheesecake> Ramen -

License...
Yeah. Well....I was packing up to leave when I remembered about the license. Oops.
Looking online, a basic license covers everything except trout. I don’t know if I’ll fish for trout and it’s more expensive. Not sure what to do. Thinkin I want to go with the cheaper license.

Most rods have a small loop near the reel mounting point whereby one can secure the hook for transport. You can also attach a quick release swivel to the line for easy detachment of the hook, sinker, or lures when breaking down the rod.
Pole or rod...only to the purists (Jale Ace) does the terminology matter.
Bobbins are placed to position the baited hook above the stream bottom. For catfish, position the bait just above the bottom while perch, bass, and other game fish about midway. Of course most advice goes out the window depending upon local water conditions.
Regarding bait options...can't get more basic than a worm, cricket, grasshopper, minnow, or the classic stink bait on a hook with a sinker and bobbin.
Above all, don't neglect the real purpose of fishing is relaxing on a river bank, with a cold beer, maybe with a valued companion, on a warm summer day.

Does Tennessee wildlife officials stock trout? I don't recall native trout when visiting, thought the water was too warm.
Utah stocks trout in many local waters. The local fly fishing folks are adamant about releasing native trout and most stocked trout. Me? I mostly release native trout but remain a fanatic regarding catch and eat stocked trout.

My 2018 goal is to learn to fish. Catch, clean, and cook.
About 15 years ago, I bought cheap fishing poles and tackle for the kids but we only used them a few times. I dug them out of the basement, cleaned one of them, and made my first fishing attempt today.
YouTube videos have been helpful with technique and it appeared the pole was in working order but apparently it isn’t. The line would not reel back in. (Is that how you say it?)
The pole has a spinning reel.
I would love advice on bait, bobbins, sinkers, technique, etc.

i haven't fished in 30 years (other than taking the boys to the trout farm where the cast to catch ratio was 33% or dad on the fishing boats in the gulf) but i still remember my gear -- a lightweight daiwa spinner with a rod that broke down into several pieces small enough to backpack. too much type A and other interests.
i'm perfectly happy fishing at costco for salmon and publix for catfish, trout, and talapia.2,000 miler -

Seeing all the bait options makes me think this is way more complicated than I planned. I thought little bait...little fish. Big bait...big fish. It seems it’s not that simple. <sigh>

Indeed, the line was not threaded under the guide but is now working as it should.
New line has been purchased, but now yet wound on the reel ( 8 lb, 330 yd Spiderwire). Best of all, I am now licensed to fish, or pretend to fish.
As always, thanks for y’alls help.Lost in the right direction. -
