Despite the rough exterior he had some charm. Was quick to say how more difficult section hiking the AT was compared to thru-hiking. Had a reputation for being extremely intelligent and it came across in our conversation. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

I few years ago my son and I were day hiking around Blood Mountain. We stopped at Mountain Crossings for a snack. We were on the patio and Baltimore Jack struck up a conversation with my son. They talked for a long time about hiking and baseball. At the end of their talk Jack tore a AT patch off his vest and gave it to my son.RIAP

I never met him, online or in person, but reading people's messages make me regret that. I'm sad for his friends and family, he'll be missed.Lost in the right direction.

He was very nice to all my kids. Shocked to hear about his passing. RIP Mr. Tarlin

I'm listening to his interview on Pox and Puss podcast (episode 16) right now. He sure had a lot of wisdom and some epic one liners
"Do you really want to end up with 2,700 pop tarts that are laughing at you?"
-Jack's warning on what will happen if you buy ahead of time and try to do maildrops the whole way but then quit early on.Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them. The post was edited 1 time, last by Sarcasmtheelf ().

That was great!
Made me appreciate the conversation I had with him even more. At the time I met him at the ATC in Harpers Ferry in 2014, I was sorta down because an injury to my knee had shut my hike down early that summer (and last summer I hiked 6 weeks with a torn rotator cuff so you know it must of been hurting), but meeting him and talking together made a great memory I will always have! The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

I am just stunned at this news. So hard to believe on the one hand but not so hard on the other.
The last time I talked to Jack was also in Harper's Ferry in July 2014. My husband & I had just parked along the street closest to the bridge to Maryland and as we were walking down the street, out comes Jack from the Outfitter there. I was happy as I was finally able to introduce my husband to Jack whom he had heard about over the years. He asked my plans and I had to say what most others in my family weren't able to acknowledge at that time, that I had to leave very shortly to drive home as my Dad was dying. We walked over to Maryland and a very short distance further and back, left Harpers Ferry around noon and I was back in my Dad's room in the hospital about 8:25 that night. Dad lingered for another 6 wks then passed into eternal life.
I first learned of Jack when I joined WB in 2006 and we exchanged PM's from time to time when I needed some particular advice generally regarding gear. I met him at the Southern Ruck in January 2008 and saw him at various times over the years, mostly Trail Days, Southern Rucks and ALDHA Gatherings. He was working at Mountain Crossings when I attempted my thru and was such an awesome trail ambassador!
I will miss his wisdom on WB, thru PM's and in person. RIP Baltimore Jack! Sincerest Condolences to his daughter. -

Just sucks. Poor guy. I met him in November at Standing Bear. He "found" me a Budweiser when they were claiming to be out of beer. Kind soul, much wisdom lost with him.www.appalachiantrailclarity.com - Life on the A.T.

Just in case you missed it, this woman wrote a 'tribute song' for Baltimore Jack. HikerBoy posted it on his FB group page. I think this song is terrific. Check it out here...

I should have known not to listen to it in the Library.

Thanks Lone Wolf. Missed seeing this 2 yrs ago. What is/was Will Greer's trailname?
I understood all or almost all the words of the song. Didn't know much about his life previously to hiking. Wonder if the songstress was intimately familiar with his previous life and also if I misunderstood the song but it sounded like she said that Jack's wife had an affair and that is why he left. Will have to listen again. -
