I recently read several esssys from various American Indian publications addressing the use of the word "Indian" to refer collectively to the indigenous people of North America. While there was some diversity of opinion, in general the authors felt this word was acceptible and superior to alternatives, such as "native Americans". Part of their logic was that to a person, the authors identity themselves according to their tribe, or clan within the tribe. Historically, there was no term for the continent's population as there was no need for one. Some objected to the fact that non-Indians have taken it upon themselves to decide what terms Indians should find offensive and use to identity themselves. None of these essays addressed the issue of athletic team names, but based on what I read, I wonder if anyone asked the Indians. It really is not for me to say, but I suspect getting rid of the Redskins and Squaw Valley are a higher priority.

I am all for respectiging the Negro Baseball Leauges, and look forward to visiting the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City someday. I feel Jackie Robinson was the greatest agent of change in the past century.
But combining the NBL statistics with MLB statistics is so flawed, and very disappointing. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

I am glad the stats are no longer segregated. This rights a wrong.
Of course, it does introduce all sorts of interesting debate about the merit of a higher batting average in a short-season negro league versus the longer season MLB. But hasn't that always been the fun of all the stats being impossible to fairly compare. Should this weird Covid season be included in the MLB stats? Baseball has changed over time so in many ways all the records are open to debate.
Should a juiced up Barry Bonds hitting juiced up baseballs for 73 HRs be compared to Babe Ruth clouting 60 HR's in 1927 (which exceeded the output of many entire teams that year)?
Add the negro league statistics into an already muddled mix and let the debates begin. It is all part of the fun and Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson and many others deserve their due.“Of all sad words of tongue or pen,
the saddest are these, 'It might have been.”

It will a long time before all the stats get reconciled and this settles out. Let the debates begin...

If you bought that $64,000 Babe Ruth autographed ball from Costco, now you can pair it with a $160,000 bat autographed by Ty Cobb.

Edit to add: The $900 baseball signed by Sandy Koufax they also have is suddenly looking like a steal of a deal.2,000 milerThe post was edited 1 time, last by max.patch ().

I thought he was still playing. Wasn't he the one who pitched forever.

I was at there when he was signed by Atlanta for one last game at age 48. He didn't last very long, but it was a good to give him the sendoff he deserved. Good crowd and everyone was there to see him, not a meaningless laste September game.
I've always had a fascination for some reason with the knuckleball.2,000 miler -

Feels like it was just yesterday the last time I watched him pitch.

Tommy Lasorda RIP
Tommy Lasorda was like Dick Vitale in that most people loved him although his abundant enthusiasm and positive mental attitude rubbed some the wrong way. Great story teller. Many fond memories of him from my visits to Spring Training in Dodgertown (Vero Beach, FL). Favorite was when Steve Sax (my favorite player at the time) was signing autographs and Tommy telling him they had to go and he let him sign one more for a kid, and my Mom asked how about one more for a grandma and Tommy let Sax sign our program.

I think all of the "planning" is going to be a total waste of time.
We should "opt out" and let MLB give this to someone else. If anybody will take it.

He signed some stuff.
Never liked him pitching, even though LA was my favorite team....he took so loooonnnggg between pitches, looked like he was trying to set record for slowest game. -

RIP Henry "Hammerin Hank" Aaron
Perhaps the greatest player I ever got to see play in person. And a great person too. For a homerun hitter not really that big of a guy, but he had amazing wrist.
He hit 44 homeruns three times, which was his uniform number. I remember a person from the Braves saying they wish they had given 55 or 66.
Hard to believe it has been nearly 50 years since I sitting with my mom watching Monday Night Baseball when he hit 715 off Al Drowning and Tom House caught it in the bullpen. Even as a Dodger fan it was special to watch. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

My first glove, used thru little league was a Rawlings Hank Aaron . We were in Atlanta market also. At one time they marketed themselves as America's Team. The turner cable networks were based in Atlanta, and carried braves games nationally. That was probably 1980s

33 year old Tim Tebow retires from baseball.
I like Tebow, but it's obvious he had no future in baseball. I think it's a good move on his part; he can now concentrate on his broadcasting career full time (along with his other activites) without taking a time out to play ball.2,000 miler -

As for MLB at his age losing last year of MiLB did not help him. Also reduced rosters were knock against him. If 2020 was a "regular year" with 162 games and the old 40 man rosters in September, I am sure the Mets would have called him up from AAA for his cup of coffee, if just for the publicity if nothing else. Knowing his character, he probably felt a little selfish taking up one of the 75 spots in Spring Training (limited due to COVID).
All in all class act that will shine in whatever he does. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

If you're wondering what Johnny Damon is up to...
He just blew a .294 on the breathalyzer which is 10 points higher than his career batting average.
(almost 4 times the legal limit of .08!)
