shirt color, is this for real ?

I'm reading more of a book 'The Backpacker's Field Manual' by Rick Curtis.

On page 131...

quoting: "Avoid bright-colored clothing and tents. Wear muted colors to reduce your visual impact."

Now, I tend to wear clothes so people can find me if I fall off a cliff, floating down the rapids towards a waterfall or sharp rocks, lost in the woods, etc.

So, is this 'wear muted colors' thing for real ? Or just some Ivory tower ( academia) silliness ? Or is it people are affended if someone wears bright colors in the forest ?

youre not bothring any wildlife, most are colorblind anyway.i generally wear black and grey, but ive got bright colored blue fleece, blue rain jkt. sometimes you need to be seen.
on the at its not an issue, as it seems everyone is making some sort of subtle or sometimes not so subtle fashion statement in their own hiker trash way.everyone expresses their individuality in different ways.its not the colors they wear that detract from the "nature" experience.

Some people recommend light colors so you can spot ticks. I generally wear dark colors for various reasons.

The LNT people say to wear muted colours and earth tones, too.

I take that about as seriously as I take their exhortation to use rubber tips on my trekking poles. (Huh? They think the crampon marks in the rocks were made by poles? WTF Really?)

Some people apparently decided to lower the respect that LNT deserves by jamming guidelines consisting absurd nonsense among the valuable ones that they should be focusing on.

A lot of hikers have specifically referenced that "muted colors" rule when telling me that they don't take the LNT organizarion seriously.

i use muted colors for clothes and tent because i may not want to be seen when i camp. lnt has nothing to do with it.

but my rain coats have always been the brightest colors i could find in case i ever want to be seen. i'm thinking an emergency or rescue situation should one ever arise.

I like earth tones, but for no other reason than...I like earth tones. Wear whatever you like. This crap started in the 80's when climbers would leave protection pieces (runners and cordage) behind and it was a eye sore, then the whole concept spread for a few years...yada yada yada.

There are, of course, a few weeks in the Fall and a few weeks in the Spring in which I wear as much blaze orange as possible.

Aside from that, it's whatever was on sale when I got it.

Like socks, price has more of an influence on my purchases than color does.
I once bought a Patagonia Down Sweater on their web special because it was a ridiculously cheap price. For that price (whatever it was) they only had it in one size and one color. It was my size, and the color, well, I've gotten used to it.

Wear what you have, or want to wear.
Or, remember, June 21st is hike neykid day and you might not wear anything at all on that day.

Bright colors are the "in" thing for athletic clothes and shoes, much to my dismay. It's hard to find tech shirts for hiking that are neutral/muted (especially for women) unless you go with white.

Yep...and while most of us aren't concerned about staying overly clean in the woods, there's something about wearing a filthy white shirt that makes you feel extra grungy.

I don't have any bright colored clothes for hiking. All are neutral colors. I hope it helps to keep the bees away.

Red is bad for bees too. I used to work sometimes helping my brother-in-law, who was a bee keeper.

I have two main hiking tshirts they are lance armstrong yellow and hunter orange. My take in it is if I fall down a cliff-face solohiking I at least want to be noticiable. I hope it annoys the LNT zealots.

With my bright red shirt, all the people in the tour boats would see me and start waving. You could hear the guide on the PA system say things like... "If you look your left, you will see Chapel Rock, Beach, and Waterfall. And next to those you will see an idiot in a red shirt on the edge of the cliff backpacking in the rain"

I don't really care what others believe I should wear, I wear whatever is on the top of the pile....and hopefully clean.....at least to start with. I'm a dull boring person so I mostly wear colors that blend in...except blaze orange during gun season, I wear it to the stand and then hang it on the tree, doubt anyone would mistake me for a deer 20' up in a tree......but then again?

ya never know....remember the girl who got shot near woody gap about 10 years ago? hunter thot he saw the flash of a white tail deer; he actually saw the flash of toilet paper being used by a 16 year old going to the bathroom in the woods where she had camped all nite.

bullet missed her heart by 1/2 inch and lodged in her collarbone. collasped her lung along the way. life flight to the hospital and luckily all turned out ok as far as i remember.

You make a good point. A dumbass carrying hiking poles is one thing, one with a gun is another. I do always wear orange when on the ground, have it where it shows in the trees, just not on me moving. I like to think I'm camoed well enough no one would see me, I walked right up to a bow hunter once and never saw him until he moved, I was walking over to see what the little red thing was (arrow knock).

I wear orange because I'm less afraid of being seen and mistaken for a deer as I am of not being seen and being downrange of a deer.

I'll never understand why folks that discharge a firearm don't "know your target and beyond"...such a basic easy concept to follow that saves lives. Crap like this should never happen.
