We just saw the movie. It was pretty funny. They did show them on McAfee after they hiked thru the SNP. Kinda hard to do that hiking nobo, but I was probably the only one in the theatre that noticed."Dazed and Confused"

Hmmm. So they did it all wrong? Should we send them an invite to the Cafe?

here's a snippet from a trailjournals entry with enough of the rules to give you a feeling for the game. i'm sure there is a complete rule book out there somewhere for those really interested.
luckily, my thru was prior to the invention of the game so i've never played it. i treat fart baseball like i do soccer - when i stumble upon a game i immediately leave.

<snip>
Seven of us ended up playing Fart Baseball for 3 hours. For those of you looking for nature related stuff skip to my next entry. Fart baseball is a game best played after a chili dinner. Each time you fart you get a single. If you burp-that's a foul. If someone else farts within 5 seconds of your fart-it's an out. If someone expresses disgust it's a double. The group playing included Eagle Eye, Grizzly (who thru hiked in '99), Fireball (who hiked 900 miles in '99), myself and 2 other thru-hikers (sorry didn't get their names). I realize it sounds disgusting but out here it's entertainment. We cracked jokes and partied for awhile. Then, way after dark I went stumbling in the pucker brush looking for my tent. I had camped further down the trail. I apologize to Sentry and her boyfriend for tripping somewhere near their tent then muttering something in French. I think I said firetruck without 5 of the letters.2,000 miler -

I wonder if when astronauts get together after seeing say "Appolo 13 they say things like "well the flux capacitor was completely outta rotation with the anti-gravity modulators according to manual C-6 of the ladies auxiliary unit" or
"I hope they don't make it back, they didn't deserve it"

It's a fun movie, nothing deep, nice scenery, some good gags. It explores the Katz-Bryson relationship in ways that the book doesn't. It's obvious that Redford and ATC collaborated on this. Redford wasn't about to do anything to piss off ATC. So, you know, Katz's "flinging" isn't in the flick. -

The article itself gets at least one correction wrong, I think. The fat women in the book, and in the movie, aren't there to suggest that southerners are obese. They're fat to make the point that Katz will chase pretty much any woman "with four limbs and a pulse", to put in Katz' own words.
In the book Bryson does poke fun southerners, but not on the matter of obesity.
The rest of the article is decent, IMO. No earth-shattering stuff, mostly stuff a LASHer would already know. -
I just saw it myself. I thought it was a funny movie and laughed out loud a number of times. I didn't critique the movie as it pertains to accuracy of hiking or of the AT.
My guess is that 75% off the people in the theater were 60 yoa or older. I don't foresee many of them hitting the trail any time soon.
Both Redford and Nolte nailed their rolls, especially Nolte.RIAP -

The inaccuracies of the trail itself in the movie were far less than those in the Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez movie "The Way".
But both are good movies. I would say both are a more accurate depiction of their background environment than the vast majority of movies.
Anyone having an expectation that it will show what hiking is like is deluding themselves.
Things that annoyed me a little included the hiking poles never used, grizzlies instead of black bears, and that the season seemed to be a permanent late spring.
I think the movie itself won't inspire potential thru hikers but it may make a new generation read the book. It is 17 years old. I think that will contribute to an increase in numbers.
Mind you, the last generation don't read books do they?

I liked it, good movie, didn't want it to end and wanted more...but there's only so much one can do in an hour and half movie.
Robert Redford~ "I'm curious, I like being a curious person, I like knowing things about the world around me"
I think this line sums up Bill Bryson's writing style, choice of subject matter, and likely Redfords take on things as well.
The movie was worth the wait, and my time. -

I wonder, can a movie ever have the same impact as the book on which it's based? Historical precedents, one way or the other? Reading a book requires a certain commitment of time and intellectual effort. A movie, not so much.
