If anything goes to court over....$600, the only ones to win are lawyers.
A ranger may have been nice to his group and told them to keep it on the down low.
But, that ranger had ZERO authority to override and amend rules. Not possible.
Jurek doesnt have a leg to stand on for the alcohol, etc.
He can argue the crowd wasnt with him. Too bad, everyone could do that. They were there because of him, he caused it, he bears some responsibility.
Just because you cant ticket everyone, does not mean that you cant ticket anyone. -

Public drinking - ok, I get it. (A brown paper bag could have avoided most of the trouble - without a warrant, or a visible label, there is almost certainly not probable cause to search the bag.) Improper disposal of wastewater - ok, I get it. Violating the restrictions of a media permit - apparently the media people, rather than Jurek ,were cited for that, if anyone was.
But the too-large party? If some sort of line isn't drawn regarding responsibility for hangers-on, essentially nobody famous can climb Katahdin for fear of being recognized and cheered at the top. Is that what we want the policy to be?
Assume arguendo that Redford were to climb Katahdin, either out of curiosity spawned by his own movie or as a publicity stunt. His face would surely be recognized, and I'm sure he'd gather a crowd. Would his fame incur an obligation to stay away, or to climb in disguise, or to climb with a security staff that can keep onlookers at a safe distance? Would your answer change if the purpose of the trip was to make a public service announcement arguing zealously for the protection of the wilderness?
I'll accept it if you want to say that fame is incompatible with BSP - that nobody famous belongs there because their very presence spoils the wilderness. I likely won't agree, but if that is your argument, I want to hear you advance it explicitly.I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here. -

Was he the only one drinking?
Did he or someone else actually bring the champagne up?
To only issue him with violations shows it was a media decision on their part.
If he wins in court it will backfire big time on them.Resident Australian, proving being a grumpy old man is not just an American trait. -

deleting Facebook posts could present a problem for Bissell. It violates the sprit of the information retention laws placed on government entities.Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.

"On Aug. 14, Keith Taylor (letter, “Why are Baxter officials hostile to park visitors?”) shared his frustrations from a visit to Baxter State Park to pick up his son, who had just completed the Appalachian Trail.
In my 36 years of visiting the park, I have always felt welcome, and not once have I experienced hostility — or anything other than friendliness — from a staff member. I have observed, however, that an increasing number of visitors think the rules apply to everyone else, but not themselves. Not getting your own way, especially when you are asking someone to bend the rules for you, does not mean the other party is being hostile."

I think most Rangers are like most LEOs. Treat them with the respect they deserve & you will get the same in return. Reminds of a sign that had in the Building Dept when I did property Management on Nantucket: Arguing with an ispector is like wrestling with pig in the mud...you aren't going to win & the pig is having fun! Driving rig over the years I had to deal with many Diesel Bears (DOT LOEs) most of it was random checks. I got many "Fix it tickets" No fine, just get it fixed in next few days & send verification that you did. Several times, they let things slide because of the way I treated them. I talked to one CA DOT Officer while at a bike show who stated if he wanted to he could find a reason to Red Tad (Shut down) a truck right off a showroom floor. You would have to piss him off for him to do it, but if you did he could find something.
I reall hope ATC, ALDHA & BSP can come up with a plan to work things out & hikers will abide by it. -

Every time Bissell opens his mouth he looks worse. He's going to loose in court because his rangers gave permission for the alcohol. Losing is court is going to be an embarrassment for him. His embarrassment is going to escalate the situation. He will either kick the AT out or go down in flames trying.

I want to retract everything I said in this discussion (and if I could delete it I would). I obviously let my hatred of supported speed hikes and the related circus atmosphere they create affect my comments. (This was waaay beack in 2015 -- perhaps I thot I was at TOS and was stirring the pot a bit.) Probably the dumbest thing I've said on this site.
