Soy sauce is mostly salt. Some people exercising in heat need supplemental sodium. Many don't.I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here.

soy sauce is mostly salt; if you read the stories of the early thru hikers many of them carried salt tablets.
i have too much type a in me to take a 4 hour rest in the middle of day. when its hot i just walk slower, take a few more breaks that are a bit longer than usual, and of course drink more. all of these things just come naturally; don't have to think about doing them.2,000 miler -
The heat has been pretty brutal at times, especially in places without the canopy of woods.
Electrolyte replacement of some kind really helps me. Drinking lots. I'm carrying tons of heavy ass water, but I'm guzzling it at times.
Also, wearing a sweatband around my head under my straw hat has done wonders to keep sweat out of my eyes.
Luckily I'm a morning person, up at 5am with the sun, so my best, fastest hiking comes before noon. I slow down drastically with more breaks in the afternoon.
Embrace the suck. Embrace the sweat. Drink enough to replenish it. They say if you're not peeing regularly, you're dehydrated. No matter how much I've been drinking, I don't pee much in the afternoons.www.appalachiantrailclarity.com - Life on the A.T.
Sometimes you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, and sometimes in the middle of nowhere, you find yourself. -
TJ, do a search for "homemade neck cooler" and make yourself one. I've made several and they work like a charm. You may also want to consider making two smaller ones, one for each wrist. The best places to find blood near the surface are your neck and your wrists and cooling the blood cools you quickest. If your Doctor is a tree, you're on acid.

OK - my answer.
I plan my day today to heavy wooded areas I just got back from French Creek and the Horseshoe Trail. I take extra water for the dogs. My dromedary bag is super chilled and inside a Reflectix bag, to keep body heat from my back getting to it. I switch from a ball cap to a full brim, I spill water on the head band on occasion, and carry Gatorade powder in glad bags.
I eat a Banana for breakfast and 1/2 a Magnesium pill (No Cramps so far)Be wise enough to walk away from the nonsense around you! -

Really the only thing I'd add, is force yourself to take breaks every so often, really easy to overdue it and have it crash down all at once. But with your profession I'd imagine you'd see that coming.
The not using AC is a good idea if it works for you, I do this too to get acclimated to the heat.

hike in the morning till it gets hot, take the afternoon off, eat an early dinner, hike after 5pm. plenty of daylight this time of year, you can still hike 7 or 8 hrs with a 4 hour break in between. youd be hot in a tent, but youll have plenty of shade, most of the section is in the forest.you shouldnt have any water issues the section you're hiking, stay hydrated , stay alert for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, keep your head cool with a wet bandana or dunk your head in the stream once in a while.
its a beautiful section, i know you'll love it

we have been using the little single serving packs of powerade from walmart or other stores. I use three a day. One per 20 oz Gatorade bottle. Cheap cheap. Gotta have beer money."Dazed and Confused"

I looked at hats that might cover my neck but think I'm going to stick to a ball cap. I need something that I can wear in rain also to keep the rain off my glasses and it seemed like the sun hats would get soaked and uncomfortable.
I looked at the forecast last night and it showed 99* for my hike. This morning it's down to 98*, what a relief! Can I get some cheese with my whine?Lost in the right direction. -
I wear glasses and always have a bucket hat. I only use a baseball cap with rain gear although the bucket hat does the job as well.
For sun protection I wear a collared shirt and turn the collar up.Resident Australian, proving being a grumpy old man is not just an American trait. -

I heard a similar young man in Chicago once make a similar comment about my crushable wool fedora. I've been wearing soft felt fedoras since before Raiders of the Lost Ark even came out. They tend to take on a similarly battered appearance. Of course, they're no good for hiking in the heat.I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here. -
I too use a bucket hat, generally in cooler weather, a treated boonie hat when its real hot, also helps to keep the rain off my headphones. If the winds are blowing and the hood on the rain coat comes out, I prefer a baseball cap under that with it's long bill.
