If you park at Springer (aka Big Stamp Gap) and hike South to the top (.09) take the usual photos etc. then turn around and hike down, cross through the parking lot and continue North to the Stover Creek Shelter you will have done about 4.6 miles.

Even though I live close to AFSP I'm yet to attend one of these. I may go this year just to say I went. Plus it would be a bonus to meet Gene Espy if he's there.

It will be busy but don't let that deter you. Get out there and embrace the experience. I hiked it a few days ago an ran across several prospective thru's. Normally weekends will be busier than mid-week.

Thursday and Friday was our 3rd annual Father/Son hike to the Len Foote Hike Inn near Amicalola Falls SP. This year my brother in law and his son came along. He's a former Eagle Scout but hasn't been on any kind of a hike since 1985. I had told him about the back country lodge as well as what he needed to bring. (Change of socks and undies, toothbrush, water bottle and a few snacks) Despite my advice he finds his old Jansport external frame pack and packs it to the gills. Three pairs of jeans, t…

I believe the clothes would have gotten cleaner if she had shaken the bag instead of rolling it...video would have definitely been better. 3. She's no hiker, didn't have socks under those heavy work boots she took off. ” #3

Welcome to the Café! Mountain Mike has some very good advice when it comes to getting out there and start hiking. You will quickly learn what gear you use and what you don't. Also, you will get a idea on your conditioning. This will improve with time but to start out you will benefit with being conservative with your mileage. If starting in Georgia (like many do) the hills here can catch some off guard. As you head north the hills aren't necessarily smaller but you will be in better shape (trail…
