Quote from Sarcasmtheelf: “When people ask me why I'm buying a mega millions ticket: ” Buy houses at both ends and along your favorite long trail(s) and hike until your legs fall off. Maybe beat Warren Doyle's total AT mileage.

What was I thinking? I could have pushed a peanut instead of skiing Breckenridge.

  • The QLink Wireless Scepter 8 tablet that a friend gave me still reboots. I switched to an Amazon Fire 7 (9th generation) that I bought on black Friday. No problems yet, but New Hampshire and Maine do not tax the memory. Just cyber hiking Maine now, after completing waypoints from I-93 north to the border.

I tried beer once. I did not like it. How many dislikes can I get?

  • Quote from Traffic Jam: “Quote from WanderingStovie: “I am getting fat and have not done much hiking in the last 5 years. I have section hiked the AT from Springer to Glencliff, but I have an itch to thruhike the AT NOBO. A February 20 start would let me camp without a bear canister at Woods Hole or Blood Mtn, and SNP would be fully open by the time I reach it. I like snow better than summer heat, and would like to pass through the Whites in July. ” The extra weight may be helpful in winter. Nic…

  • Severe thunderstorms, strong wind gusts, flooding, penny size hail

  • Quote from IMScotty: “WS, let us know how this works out for you. It's not for me, I am a paper map guy. ” I created waypoint files for AT sections from Springer Mtn to the NJ NY border, but then things bogged down. My tablet rebooted itself and I lost data. I think 1GB RAM was not enough. I reinstalled and only loaded NY and CT. Things are faster now. I hope I can cyber hike to Katahdin without more problems.

  • Las Vegas airport probably has other ways to waste coins.

  • I do not have a GPS capability. I always take a compass.

  • I downloaded MapFactor Navigator to my Android tablet, along with 2 gigabytes of map data. Now I can save waypoints to a GPX file, zip the file, and attach it to a message. The process is not as easy as it might be, but the tablet and software were free.

  • Slaughter Creek Trail campsites are in the zone.

  • Thanks MP. The regulation improves safety for hikers and bears, but creates a high usage area at Jarrard Gap. The garbage pile I saw at Blood Mtn some years ago surely contributed to the problem. I saw this problem in SNP at one of the picnic areas, where wildlife (bear?) scattered trash.

  • Quote from max.patch: “Quote from WanderingStovie: “A February 20 start would let me camp without a bear canister at Woods Hole or Blood Mtn, and SNP would be fully open by the time I reach it. ” Very few thru hikers carry a bear canister because of our regulation. Most stop short of Jarrard Gap (Lance Creek is popular) and then just hike thru the 5 mile bear canister zone the next day. ” Does the regulation prohibit camping on the Slaughter Creek Trail?

  • Do I really want a hang tag? After hiking more than 2000 miles it might be a little late to sit through an LNT lecture, weigh my pack, and get a pack shakedown. I am thinking of catching a bus to Dalton and walking to Springer on the Pinhoti and BMT. The Dalton road walk would be a challenge unless someone takes pity on me.

Quote from Astro: “I guess on the upside, at least multiple AT hikers have found refuge in the restrooms during cold weather. Although better planing probably should had them at one of the shelters with a fireplace. ” Ice Water Spring is a short walk, unless you miss the turn.

Quote from TrafficJam: “Quote from Drybones: “My old Moto phone is on it's last leg, about to fall apart into two halves, and it's so slow it's almost useless as a gps which is what I got it for. I could not bring myself to spend $700-$800 for something I don't normally carry so I did some research and ended up ordering an LG G5 phone for $265, the two things that swayed me on it was the camera, 16 MP and 8 MP wide angle in back and 8 MP in front, and the fact you can replace batteries...for hik…
