Is dispersed camping allowed and/or practical? I checked out their web site and they mention campgrounds and shelters, but nothing about wild camping.

  • My father was a backpacker when I was young. I enjoyed having him show me his gear, explaining the advantages of the suspension system of his pack, etc. He had big heavy leather boots and would spend much time oiling them to make them waterproof. In the late 60's he took me on my first backpacking trip. We did a short hike on the AT in MD, starting at Washington Monument State Park going to a shelter. He never did long distance hikes but I remember he and his hiking buddy did a week long trip in…

PS. I sent an email to the park explaining the situation. They promptly replied with a full pardon: Quote: “"Your email brought a huge smile to my face! All is certainly forgiven. The old axiom holds true, that it is always better late than never. Thank you so much for your enduring love of National Parks, Sincerely, Ranger AJ Ferrara" ”

Back in 1997, (plus/minus a year - don't recall for sure) our family took an epic cross country camping trip. On June 13 we departed a quaint "mom and pop" motel on n Red Lodge MT, drove over the Beartooth Pass (still buried under feet of snow), through Cooke City and in the NE entrance of Yellowstone NP. Unfortunately there was no one at the gate to take our $20. I had every intention to mail in my fee with the envelope provided. But somehow, I never got around to it. While surfing the web on m…

Was there an explanation how it was hypothermia when the temps were in the mis 70s to 100s? I'm not doubting. I just don't understand.

Quote from IMScotty: “Nice, slice it open. As long as it is completely white in side it is edible. Puff Balls are the 'tofu' of mushrooms. They take on the flavor of what you cook it with. ” I just left it. Since it is a county park, I thought I should leave it. Plus there are so many poisonous fungi, I'm not sure I trust myself to not get something toxic. It was amazingly firm. It sounded like a watermelon when you thumped it.

Since I would be traveling alone, I'd probably just camp. I recall reading about your ability to get a last minute permit, but I don't think I want to fly out without a permit. My available dates are the last couple days of April and first couple days…

  • Not sure I can help you. For a while we toyed with the idea of selling our pop up camping trailer and replacing it with a large car camping tent. But now my wife wants to go the other direction and replace it with a small camping trailer (not pop up). Otherwise I might replace my TT Notch with one of the next batch of Durston XMid1P tents that are supposed to be available around the end of the year. They will probably sell out in about 30 seconds so one will have to be quick on the mouse button.

I don't think this thread has been started yet, so I will do the honors. It looks like I might have a window of opportunity for a hike between April 28 and May 8. High on my wish list are Isle Royale, Northern Sweden, Nepal, Sierra Mountains, New Zealand, and Kilimanjaro. As none of those are possible in the first week of May, I resort to plan B: 1. Grand Canyon 2. Someplace Else Any input on either of these options for the first week of May is appreciated.

Yes, I did not save any of the good first batch to innoculate the failed second batch. Then I gave up. We have several Asian grocery stores (Indian, Chinese, Korean) where you can buy spices, dozens of different types of curry powders, hot pepper flakes, etc... by the kg for about the same price they sell the little tiny jars at the supermarket. Rediculously cheap.

I have seen ready to eat chickpeas (not dehydrated) in pouches, probably in the Indian food section. Probably already seasoned. I wouldn't give up on dried chick peas. A 15 minute steep in a pot cozy after boiling my work. I have never tested this, but I think bringing foods like basmati rice and red lentils to a boil in a pot followed by a steep is more effective than freezer bag cooking which won't get the food as hot for as long. Another thing to test. BTW, basmati rice (the really good, real…
