After a little experience it switched to ticks (Lyme disease) and a tree following on me. My wife has reminded me we have plenty of deer running through our yard all the time. And now I almost had a tree fall on me. So I guess the AT is no more dangerous than my yard. ” I got bit by a Lyme carrying tick doing yard work 4 years ago, now I do yard work in my treated hiking clothes! My yar…

Quote from odd man out: “I also learned how to play the recorder back in HS, which could come in handy if I wanted to bring an instrument hiking (have considered it, but not done it yet). A plastic soprano recorder is indestructible, waterproof, lightweight, small, and easy to carry. None of these are true of my cello. ” I met a young lady in 2013 hauling a cello up Blood mountain, I always wonder how far she got as it was June 28 and she was "thru-hiking"!

What part of the world is Duck Park? I have never heard of safety shoes for hiking, and I have been hiking for over 40 years. Weight on your feet is very tiring so I use the lightest shoes that protect my feet from rocks. Because of my age I also carry the lightest pack that will do the job. Welcome to the Café, where we revel in doing it all wrong!
