Quote from Dan76: “After spending several weeks at sea level, I was wheezing when hiking at 4-5k feet in southern Utah. ” That was me last year when I went to Arizona. I was near Flagstaff at a music festival. The elevation was something above 7,000 feet. I wasn't even hiking. A high school friend who lives in Phoenix drove up for part of the day. When it was time for him to leave, I walked with him out to the parking area. Now, I'm fat and out of shape, but a 1/4 (ish) mile walk with a slight i…

Quote from Jake Ace: “Quote from LIhikers: “March and April are tough months to pack for. The weather can go in any direction and you need to be ready for it all. ” I’ve lost more sweat shirts during that time of year, leave house all bundled up in the morning and come home in a t-shirt. ” Some people carry this thing called a backpack when they go hiking. They take off a layer of clothing and put it in the backpack, thus having it available for another day.

  • What Are You Reading?

I've been ADHDing the reading lately. Start one, bounce to another, and so on. It's quite annoying...if only I could figure out why and stop it. Anyway, currently in the middle of (and pushing on with both until completion rather than starting something else) Dale Brown's latest, called Act of Revenge. Looks to be another new series for him, or at least I guess so because it's subtitled A Puppet Master Thriller but I can't find any other Puppet Master books by him. That's the fiction side. On th…

I'm sure there's a niche somewhere in the Cafe for this, but I'm not looking for it. I'm not posting this as a tip so much as to find out what you real hikers think of this idea. At some point in this video, the guy mentions a 3x thru-hiker (now attempting his 4th) who said a good way to avoid mouse problems at shelters is to leave what amounts to an offering out for easy access. They'll fill up on that and won't be as likely to dig through packs and such. youtube.com/watch?v=B2bf8B39cmg

Since the thread has been resurrected... I was home, off from both jobs that day. I was as usual goofing off on the innerwebz while enjoying the morning coffee and a rare weekday off. My routine was to flip to Headline News, listen to it for a few half hour cycles, usually picking up the big stories through that. By the time of the attacks I had turned down the volume but still had the TV on. I was in a Yahoo chat room (anyone remember those?) and someone screame in all caps, "OMG A PLANE HIT TH…

Quote from odd man out: “My prediction is that my wife will say she just wants to watch the commercials, but will watch the game anyway, get angry over the outcome and be miserable to live with for several days. Meanwhile I will pig out on chili, wings, chips, dip, shrimp cocktail, and Two Hearted Ale and make myself miserable and will feel guilty for not grading the 110 exams my students took last friday. What a stupid "holiday". ” 'MURRICA!
