At some point in this video, the guy mentions a 3x thru-hiker (now attempting his 4th) who said a good way to avoid mouse problems at shelters is to leave what amounts to an offering out for easy access. Depending on the shoe I've worn anything from 11-13 my entire life. USUALLY more in the 11.5-12.5 range but that's still ridiculous. Edited to add: My entire alleged adult life, that is.
