It's unseasonably, unseasonably warm here in Metropolitan Detroit. It's been in the high 40's, low 50's for the past 4 days and supposed to continue through Sunday. The high tomorrow is actually supposed to be 57. Our normal high at this time is right around freezing. I served snowflake pasta for dinner on Monday thinking it would complement the snow outside. We haven't seen snow since November.

Quote from Astro: “Campus is pretty this time of year. This is where my youngest son will be getting married in a few weeks. ” That is gorgeous. Perhaps his upcoming wedding is why the young guy helped you with raking leaves this fall; got to spend quality time with Dad; might not happen much in future.

Quote from odd man out: “I have no problem teaching patriotic songs to the next generation. There are plenty of good arguments to support that. But I do not think people should label those who disagree as "country-haters". It is the first page of the dictator's playbook. First you get "duly elected" by appealing to love of country and the fear of outsiders. Then you equate opposing viewpoints to hating your country. Thus opponents become traitors to be eliminated. Once you have eliminated the op…

  • Quote from Trillium: “So, after our vacation at the cottage where the meals were a bit on the decadent indulgent side, I have given up desserts, drinking my favorite Orange Cappuccino and most products with more than just a tad of sugar. It's been 3 weeks and I'm doing pretty good so far. Yesterday I saw Brittany Runs a Marathon and it was very inspirational so I'm doubling my efforts to work out, walk and hike! (But not run, I have less than zero intention to run, much less a marathon) ” As I w…

Quote from IMScotty: “Dreading the family Thanksgiving dinner ” Thank you for revisiting this thread. I truly enjoyed reading what I wrote 5 years ago (before Mom passed). Quote from odd man out: “We go to a friend's house for Thanksgiving every year. Each person in the group gets a cooking assignment. Every year I am required to bring the stuffing and pecan pie. For the stuffing recipe I just improvise. For the pie, I have for decades made this one, which is probably the best pecan pie recipe o…

Had tears running down my face for at least 1/2 hour last night as I learned right when I turned the tv on to watch my Spartans, that Zachary Winston, 19 yr old brother of our All American and preseason National Player of the Year, Cassius Winston, died Saturday night after he walked in front of a train on his Albion University campus. The young man was a sophomore PG on the Albion team. Last year he and his roommate were harrassed for being black. I don't know if it continued but the young man …

Quote from Astro: “Had the chance to walk a little on the AT today around Wayah Bald Fire Tower. ” I'm so glad that even though I only have half hour to get ready to meet up with some friends, that I came to this thread. Supposed to go hiking and I just was not motivated at all, but this page has me chomping at the bit. Thanks fellow hikers! My sister wants me to hike with her in late March in KY but I'm totally rethinking that as MARCH MADNESS!!! And your pics have me thinking that if my team g…

Quote from odd man out: “So what is the most extreme downhill ride? I once read that the ride from the summit of Haleakala (Maui) to the ocean was the only place you could bike from 10,000 feet above sea level to the ocean on 35 miles of paved public roads. They used to have tours that would take you up and you coast back down, but the National Park now doesn't allow that anymore so the commercial excursions now have to start at the park entrance (6300 ft). However the park service doesn't preve…

  • Quote from CoachLou: “But, both Wednesdays I've been at Huts it was Pulled Pork, both times. '18' at Lakes and 2 weeks ago at Carter Notch. ” That settles it, if I ever hike in the Whites, I'm definitely going to stay at a hut on Wednesdays! Who doesn't love some good Pulled Pork?

  • Happy Belated Astro! So, I scrolled up to the top of the page just to see if I had missed anything from before Coach's post on Friday and was kind of saddened to see how many posters don't appear to haven't posted in over a year. "Adam’s writing style was eviscerating but in a special way: you could see his passion and you liked him, even as he cut you down." Wow; great description of his responses to Warren Doyle on WhiteBlaze. Well, I wrote the above after reading just the first few paragraphs. Just read the part about Doyle and threw up in my mouth a little bit. And to Warren I say "kind of the pot calling the kettle black" when he says that Jack was responsible for clannishness. His whole hiking academy peeps are pre…
