Odd Man Out, Thanks for asking, it took me a while to figure things out. The Donation Tab is all set up and working, but no reason for anyone to worry about this, we had generous donations last year, and I am doing OK for now. Scott

The Scottish Cow The only cow in a small town in Ireland stopped giving milk. Then the town folk found they could buy a cow in Scotland quite cheaply. So, they brought the cow over from Scotland. It was absolutely wonderful. It produced lots of milk every day and everyone was happy. They bought a bull to mate with the cow to get more cows so they'd never have to worry about their milk supply again. They put the bull in the pasture with the cow but whenever the bull tried to mount the cow, the co…

Quote from StalkingTortoise: “Another interesting fact is that the passenger coach and the engine are not coupled. The engine pushes the coach on the way up and stops the coach from accelerating on the trip back down to base camp. Also, the engine has multiple cog drives engaging the track, so one malfunction doesn't cause a crisis. On the trip down, our brakeman kept one hand firmly on one of the coach brake wheels during the entire descent. Mrs. Tortoise struggled mightily with the steady 50 m…

I'm happy to think out loud about this with you. If you divide things up somewhat evenly, that means you are looking for sections around 440 miles in length. If you are looking to do it in 2 1/2 years I'm guessing you want to do a spring hike and a late summer fall hike with a break in-between. Is that right? I would be looking for sections with good public transportation opportunities at the end points. If it were me, I would want to save Katahdin for last, but if you have a different thought o…

Yup, Williamstown, MA., a pretty college town. Has a great little art museum (The Clark), and is near North Adams which has a large modern art museum (Mass MoCA, if you like that sort of thing). For Revolutionary history buffs, Bennington, VT is a short drive north. And I hear there is some long distance trail nearby too. If the do the gathering on Columbus Day weekend, that area should be just a few days short of peak fall foliage.

This is all very entertaining, but these debates are not very fruitful. HB, I hope to make it to one of the gatherings someday, perhaps next time it is held in New England. Most years on Columbus Day weekend I get a cabin near Gorham, NH with my wife (wish the kids still came.)

  • Stalking Tortoise, Beautiful pictures and fine writing. What a great trip report.

  • The inReach story was funny, at least on this end. But probably not to your wife. Looks like you will be climbing up the 19 mile Brook Trail sometime next year? Sounds a bit easier, and you will have a smaller chunk to cover to get to Rt. 2. Looking forward to hearing about the other part of your hike.

Stalking Tortoise, I am looking forward to hearing about your hike. On the bright side, maybe when you get back up that way I will be free to meet you in Gorham for a cold one. Usually my family is in the neighboring town (Randolph, NH) every Labor Day Weekend, but not this year.:( My wife and I do plan to do some leaf-peeping there for Columbus Day.

  • Hello Counselorman, welcome to the Cafe. I have only done short, weekend hikes in CT. I cannot advise on the entirety. Anyone else? One CT section I did had some pretty steep climbs, but they were of a reasonably short duration. No big mountains. Connecticut also has some easy strolling sections along the Housatonic River. I would think the hike you are suggesting would be a great section to start, especially if you plan on averaging a ten-mile pace. Where in NY did you plan to start your hike?
