Lots of times I never filtered in the Whites or used any treatment. Enoug spring fed streams with not much above. I'd be wary south of the Whites & in the Mahusucs where there are lots of beaver ponds. In fact Berlin that draws it's water from them had a outbreak of Giardia many years ago. Also factor in the Huts where you can refill your water.

I've always considered good food as a reward for the miles I do. Thus a bit more weight in fuel is never a concern. Cook time doesn't bug me either because I can be filtering water or setting up my tent at the same time, or just kick back & read. If I share weight with a partner, I'll make it from scratch. If I go boxed, I'll lean toward the heavy velvita with broccoli. If doing a box with powder,it needs help; tuna, salmon, bacon, FD veggie, pack of mustard, etc

I was thinking about it for mid August but decided to switch planning with the fire currently burning & dry conditions out there. There are now fires on both sides of the trail in Durango area. I would mon itor other sites to see how it could affect your hike.

I agree with hitting northern states due to the timing. I would suggest you join ALDHA (Appalachian Long Distance Hiker Association) aldha.org/ For $10 memebership you also get a PDF copy of their Trail Companion. I reccomend Vermont along with NH & ME. One of the benefits is that there are bus systems that somewhat paralell the AT/ LT (Long Trail) South of Killington & ME Jct you will share camping areas/shelters with Thru Hikers. I learned to cook on cast iron. Rule in my scout troop was meals were cooked from scratch. Nothing like a stew or chili that has simmered for hours on a cold winter trip! Cobblers are quick & easy. I'ven even stacked dutch ovens wen baking for a crowd to save on charcoal when doing a seminar on it. Love cooking on cast iron. Yeserday I had two pots going. Just wanted to let you all know that Fort Bastion is no more. A partner Trubrit had when he first started & bailed has come back after five year, sued & won. He has to sign over the deed to her. We have untill June 1st to remove any personal property from there. It sucks. I hate to see it go with all the work & dreams that was put into the place. I loved the time I got to spend there!
