PostOut with the old and in with the new REI Wind Matches & UCO improved matches. For years after watching a John Wayne movie - I remember he spoke about finding a wind match in one scene out west. I found a box and its has been a small part of my kit. There are few interesting add on's in the bottle. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…7e95e6fc4302f7097c65b9b0e Inside each bottle is a small amount of Cotton and fire starting patch (charcoal cotton) This keeps the matches from rattling. Under the Soto is…

PostQuote from WanderingStovie: “I prefer to let my cuts dry out, for the same reason meat is preserved by drying. Bacteria need moisture to thrive. But maybe I'm doing it wrong. ” The inventor had a hard time selling the product until he would deliberately cut & burn himself and apply the salve. Then pointed to the previous cuts that had healed on his arms, it appears to be the "original antibiotic"

Quote from TrafficJam: “I've used a space blanket under my pad. Not sure if it made me warmer, it's hard to measure that. The sun visor idea is great, it can also be used as a sit pad. ” I cant get past the performance, 1. survival - nope 2. noise 3. can't repack it well end up tossing after a while. As I moved to hanging between two trees, and suffer from noassitol, I cut up an old Thermarest pad to a 3/4 and the 1/4 is my sit pad.

PostQuote from TrafficJam: “Has anyone tried removing layers when they are cold? ” NO - never. And Merino wool is old school - and less itchy than red wool long johns. Here is the takeaway, smaller fibers than human hair trap more warmth "air" against the skin. Hense the success of Winter Under Armor and knock offs. The original invention is Polartec. Adopted for the army in high altitude warfare. The inventor was an idiot who never patented his invention. By making fibers smaller and closer togethe…

PostQuote from WanderingStovie: “If it is woven, why not rip stop? ” This is a clear trade off - lighter better, but not wear resistant, Sail cloth can be tossed each year with the Billions they make each year. Rip stop is heavier and isn't solar resistant. There are additives involved as the sun can make visible holes in one season.
