  • Quote from LIhikers: “WOO, thanks for the photos. I haven't been there since I was a kid. ” It has changed so much, the museum has changed too.

  • Quote from Astro: “Quote from Wise Old Owl: “Five-in-one survival whistle? Gram Weenie Whistle more like it. ” Popular gift at Boy Scout Christmas parties. ” Yea I understand - its still a toy, and useless. A real compass would be better, storm whistle a Solar Flash and learn how to use it.

  • - Ok this is interesting 4-in-1 Dynamo Flashlight - I wouldn't want to try it. I guessing you can put a small charge on it for five minutes - but would end up cranking it for two hours to get the phone going. SXXXX Enterprises 4 in 1 Dynamo Emergency Radio Flashlight offers a bright flashlight with 3 LED bulbs, an AM/FM radio, cell phone charger, and a loud siren. The cell phone charger uses a USB port which can be used with ANY cell phone as long as you have a USB charger for it. This avoids th…

  • I have seen the military take over the park on a few occasions to promote our forces, sometimes around the weekend of July 4th - quite a sight. Never seen the BSA (Camping) there in a long time.

  • Quote from JimBlue: “I saw one of those cars when I was in the Navy. My whisper light clogged up last camping trip. That's why I was thinking of a second stove. The propane cans my relatives have are unused but they have had them for years. My brother in law said we should clean and test the stove before I take it camping. I fully agreed. I have been using Coleman white gas. The plastic bottle label says it has additives so it burns better. That might be the cause of the clogging. I want to find…

Friday, I picked up another 4 pounds of Salmon and teaching Ashley to make Smoked Lox, so we are doing a cold smoke in a day or two, got to get to the hardware store for the aluminum dryer vent to connect the Electronic Smoker to a separate Micro Weber. Right now its chilling in Sea Salt, And Brown Sugar for the next three days. I will take a few pictures. Oh I almost forgot I found it for $20 in Wilmington De. Nice huh? Wait till this kid gets her first taste! READ MORE ITS EASY! There is a sec…

  • If you are going to car camp with mini propane bottles, can I recommend a safe solution to keep them from leaking... The BSA and myself discovered even with the white cap or refilled - they sometimes leak. SOLUTION HERE

  • Yes it is cold outside! I am so lucky to be just a half hour from some of the best biking trails, hiking trails, and backwoods trails. From this park the Horseshoe connects thru the park to the AT and Philadelphia, They just built a new bike bridge to the Schuylkill Trail on the other side of the river. So I was there today during the storm to see the park in winter. As I walked around the lop I was wondering how really bad George Washington and his thousands of troops had to endure the winter s…

  • Here is another interesting idea - but you really should do this outside like I do, do not do this anywhere near the house. Please be safe! I have been refilling Propane Canisters for years. So to find an equivalent for Butane is exciting. No more $5 per bottle and long drives to REI! - "Yippe!" Advantages - 1. Refilling 1/2 used Butane nesting cans for under .75 cents per use.Refilling 1/2 used Butane nesting cans for under .75 cents per use. 2. Refilling empty canisters, 3. Removing any excess…

  • Found this by accident, not sure about the value, as most of us appear to be on alcohol stoves. I like them so long as they nest inside the pots. their clear advantage is higher heat and simmer capabilities. Part of the problem with Butane Canister's that I am sure most of us live with is: 1. Price 2. half empty bottles and what to do with them. 3. Rust inside the pots between the pot and the fuel. 4. Not able to recycle them, or refill. So here comes a few solutions - This little jem is under $…

  • Quote from TrafficJam: “Traditionally, fishermen wore wool because it wicks moisture away from the skin and retains it while maintaining most of it's warmth. ” TJ how long ago was this Irish Tradition you speak of? On the Ocean - Helly Juell Hansen had been at sea since the age of 14 and in 1877, at the age of 35, he and his wife Maren Margarethe began producing oilskin jackets, trousers, sou'westers and tarpaulins, made from coarse linen soaked in linseed oil. Over the first five years they sol…

  • Source "multi-day outings in frigid temperatures" He goes on to write "It was my first serious winter experience, and a problem that became immediately clear was that my clothing and sleeping system failed to adequately manage perspiration. For example, my sleeping bag (a top-of-the-line model rated to -5 F with premium 850-fill down) would become more damp—and less lofty—with each long night curled up in it. My running shoes and Forty Below Light Energy overboots were frozen stiff each morning …

  • VBL or Vapor Barriers, Yes they are in my pack I use a 20 gallon inside my pack to keep my stuff dry. from time to time I have carried plastic sheet - the $1 poncho. When it gets really cold, I add the sheet below my legs and buttocks in the hammock when there is wind. I have also tossed both feet into the 20 gallon to improve cold performance. Other than that, what else can be done?

Quote from Dan76: “Quote from Wise Old Owl: “Quote from SarcasmTheElf: “ncepts ” If we actually taught our children how to navigate success & financial education which is beyond most public school teachers over the last 40 years, maybe as a nation we would not be in this mess regardless of which side we are on. ” Disagree. The aforementioned concepts are not beyond the teachers I've known, however the lack of time required coupled with low parental support is a major driver. ” wow - I am very ha…

  • No tags - just opinion, forget sciences. I understand I am surrounded on this site with some smart folk! We are in the cold season. What can we share as a group about VBL in our backpack and what are you using this for... I have a couple of ideas that I will pepper the tread and I will respectfully ask we stay on topic. Can I ask for some help for a winning thread? Thanks ahead, Woo
