  • Quote from StalkingTortoise: “Sticking with the year 1977, I just heard that M. Emmet Walsh passed away. He had a bit part as sports writer Dickie Dunn in the movie Slapshot (1977). This thread has experienced good thread drift. The original topic was based on the rantings of a lunatic. ” Paul Newman, Hanson Brothers, definitely a classic worth watching again.

I don't know what that means but I fully support the statement. ” He must be referring to how I used my trust fund money to ruin the thru hiking experience for everyone. ” Hey, all I can say is I appreciate you using your "trust fund money" to help Coach Lou slack pack me in NY and then even gave me half your sub when I met you in Harriman. Definitely didn't ruin my hike. Instead some of my favorite memories.

Quote from LIhikers: “Kathy and I got to Harriman S.P. about 1PM on Friday and started walking just a little after. It was in the low 50s with a pretty good breeze. During the drive to Elk Pen parking lot we decided to overnight at the Big Hill (I think that's the name) shelter area. 3.7 miles in and a lot of it was up hill. Since it rained the night before there were a lot of puddles and mud. Also all the streams were running high and fast.. We got to the area, set up our tent and walked over t…

  • 13 years ago started AT with my 10 year old son. At Thanksgiving did 3 nights of Springer to Neel Gap. Followed that up with 3 nights at Spring Break with Neel Gap to Dicks Creek Gap. He really enjoyed the first trip, the second was OK, but he was not up for the next trip. Despite less than 70 miles of my 2,193, we till have good memories from the experience. If they enjoy hiking, I do not think a week is too much to take on. Although a weekend pre-hike is always a great idea. Having another chi…

Congratulations!!! 4 more years (and 8 weeks for me ). But not quite as drastic for me since I can get "20 weeks off a year" if I want now. Of course when raising 4 children I usually ended up working a lot more.

  • Reminds so much of the Jimmy Buffett line "don't try to describe the ocean if you have never seen it." While I tried to read and learn as much as I could about the AT, how I really learned was by actually doing it. And you run into so many different types of people, it really is not worth getting mad at them, especially before you even meet them.
