  • What's you hiking experience and gear set up? Doing half the trail in that period would require 17 miles per day. That would take a pretty strong hiker. A typical thru hike is at a pace of something like 13 mpd (that includes time for resupply stops). So at that pace, you could hike about 900 miles from June 3 to mid Aug. If you wanted to hike the north "half" and end at Katahdin, that would have you starting at Delaware Water Gap (PA/NJ line). Goung south, you could start at Swift Run Gap in SN…

  • Hello Stinkfinker. Welcome to the Café! New members get a dancing banana. Before getting to your question, let me suggest you go to the General Hiking forum and introduce yourself on the Introduce Yourself thread. We have other teachers here (I'm a nearly retired chemistry professor). Perhaps you could explain your name. Is that a trail name? On second thought, maybe we don't want to know what you may have done to earn the name Stinkfinger As for where to LASH on the AT starting in early June, I…

As we are discussing helicopter rescue and insurance, it made me think of a scam that was taking place in Nepal recently. Guides leading commercial trekking groups into the Himalayas would plan an itinerary that would be almost guaranteed to give most people altitude sickness (headaches, nausea). As soon as the clients have a symptom, the guide tells them they need to be rescued. A helicopter comes and takes them to a hospital in Kathmandu where they do a bunch of tests and hold them for observa…

I agree the Garmin plan sounds like a good deal assuming you are using one of their devices (I have an In Reach Mini v2, I assume that is included) and on a domestic hike.

Quote from LIhikers: “what's a Betelgeuse ? ” Betelgeuse is the 10th brightest star in the sky. It is the top-left star in the constellation Orion. It is a red giant that will probably go supernova in a few hundred thousand years. Last night a large asteroid in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupitor passed right in front of Betelgeuse, blocking its view for about six seconds. It's like a solar eclipse, but with an asteroid and star instead of sun and moon. Because they are so far away and ap…

Quote from rhjanes: “...Found Climbing above 5000 M is High Risk (HR), so is sky diving, base jumping, Free Climbing, all sorts of stuff. Hiking is not listed as HR. $39.99 a year. Is that a fair price? Seems very reasonable. ” I've researched this before but didn't know about the Garmin plan. For comparison, some adventure world travelers use Global Rescue, which is not insurance but an actual rescue company. You get injured, you call them, they come get you, anywhere, any time. No fee, no clai…

The ball is thrown behind the defender. The receiver stops and collides with the defender who, running at full speed, could not possibly stop in time to avoid the collision. Defensive pass interference is called. ... ” See my previous post for the complete rant. It just happened again in GA vs AL. Even the announcer says "I hate th…

Quote from Astro: “Not all Facebook groups are equal.by any means. The Colorado Trail Thru-hikers is one of the better ones, probably thanks to Bill Manning. ” The Isle Royale group is pretty good too. They had a great forum for years but activity there seems to be shifting to FB. It's bit surprising that they had such an active on line group given IR is the least visited NP outside AK. Kind of like us. A small group of dedicated followers.
