  • All I know, which isn’t much, is that bear cans are kinda, sorta, maybe, must..ish, required for some places.

In that section, most of the water sources are labeled as “seasonal” and “unreliable”. There will definitely be water available in September after the wet summer. It seems to me that gravity filter vs pump is a toss up, both have pros and cons. Flip a coin and take some aquamira as a backup.

Quote from Espeycaver: “So for the last question, should I bring a gravity or pump filter? My gravity filter is half the weight and will work fine if the pipes are flowing. ” I don’t have experience with gravity filters and my pump filter got clogged in the Smokies and was thrown away so I don’t know the answer. (I’ve been using the original Sawyer Squeeze for years without any problems.)

Quote from hikerboy: “I've been groovin on Billy Strings . His live shows have been on nugs.net. Amazing guitarist with an incrdibly talented band. youtu.be/r3rM0X3ayTg ” Me too! He has an inspiring story of addiction recovery. I love his version of Shady Grove, it has all the elements of what my music teacher is trying to teach my jam group. Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway are really hot right now. I’ve followed the fiddle player, Bronwyn Keith-Hines for several years and watched her develop as…

They don't even have the correct answer as one of the choices for the (very poorly written) question that was asked. But, like everyone else, I got the question "correct" only becasue we knew what they were trying to ask. ” And i keep forgetting and get it incorrect every time it comes up. Ugh.

Quote from Espeycaver: “I thought you could camp anywhere, didn't know how strict the national park was. I also know about the permit requirements. There is now a parking permit required. I'm mainly concerned about water. Are the springs flowing in Sept and gravity filter vs. pump. If I have to dig a hole for water and have a gravity bag I'm screwed. ” You’re in TN so you know we’ve had a ton of rain, there won’t be a problem with water in Sept.

Hot Corn Cold Corn is a simple, traditional bluegrass song that can be embellished in really cool ways. I love this version, (hope the link works.) Too bad the fiddle doesn’t take a break. Don’t try to understand it, the lyrics make no sense which makes it fun to sing and play. youtu.be/YWJ8m8tNATs

Quote from jimmyjam: “Anyone heard these guys? I stumbled across them. Steve n Seagulls. They are a Finnish band that does bluegrass versions of heavy metal. I really like it. youtu.be/3JFb_aOn6rc ” Interesting and entertaining for sure…but calling themselves a bluegrass band (per their bio) isn’t exactly correct. The definition of bluegrass is everyone takes a break and gets “showcased” so to speak while the others play back-up, never melody. They are more of a band who plays rock using traditi…

Yesterday I walked on the trails again, maybe 4 miles. It amazes me how many trails are around here with easy access. I just walk out the door of the hotel. I was on a loop trail, mostly following my nose, when I came to a parking area that I had to walk through before accessing the next trailhead. A sketchy man (nearly sure he was homeless) with a pit bull got out of a beat up vehicle (held together with duct tape). The dog looked happy and friendly with a nice harness on but I decided to be ca…

Let's see, long distance hiking, spinning yarn, knitting, playing the fiddle, helping people through your nursing career and maybe most important being a mom and grandmother. And that's all I know about, I'd bet there's more. ” Thank you, that’s so kind of you to say!

I’m in Colorado. I accompanied my dad to his 60th college reunion. It’s hard taking care of an elderly parent (airports are absolute nightmares for the disabled) but I was fortunate to have some time off for a wonderful walk today. My dad is a true hero. He was nominated for the Medal of Honor. (I overheard his classmate say, “you should have gotten that medal, you had more balls than anyone I’ve ever seen.) Hearing and seeing the respect his classmates have for him is awesome. He’s in very poor…

  • Great ideas! Thanks! On my recent trip,I was responsible for a dinner and bought several pouches of Backpackers Pantry mushroom stroganoff for my daughter and her friends (who ended up not going). She thought it was decent but I tried a bite and didn’t like it at all. It is so, so salty with that weird preservative taste… yuck! Hawk Vittles is much better. I’m a recent convert to ramen with a healthy broth and veggies or kimchi. You can’t go wrong with ramen.

My daughters friends bailed for various reasons so it was just the two of us. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to the beach and I have little to no experience with hiking or camping in the coastal region so I was delighted with the flora and fauna on the island. The mossy trees are amazing and the armadillos were numerous and unconcerned by us and often walked through our camp, snuffling the ground. We also saw deer, lizards, moths and butterflies, birds, crabs, and wild horses. The ferry d…
