From what I read at Kevin's link, there was no mention of her having a hiking partner. I'm fine with winter hiking but only with a partner. There's just too much that can go wrong.

I am willing to spend some extra money to reduce weight, like down bag vs a synthetic one. Yet I have a hard time spending really big money to knock a few more ounces off it. I also don't fit in lightweight category since I will cook some. On a long distance hike I see food as one of my rewards. With cowboy Coffee & normally oatmeal for breakfast & a ho…

Forgot to mention.... while we were in Asheville, we took a little side trip to Black Mountain for a short visit with Chris Gallaway and his wife Larissa and new son Colin. Chris is the fellow who made the film "Long Start To the Journey" (theatmovie.com.) Chris and Larissa are Frost and Sunshine in the movie. If you haven't seen it, you're missing one of the best thru-hiking films ever made.

Get a white box refurb from Micro Center. I've bought two Intel i5 HP laptops with Win 7 Pro installed -- about $200 each (one for me, one for my wife.) No problems with either one.

So Merry and I are back from our road trip to Florida. We saw a lot of the AT. On the way down, while visiting my niece and her family, we spent a gorgeous summer-like day in Harpers Ferry. Wow, that was was almost three weeks ago. On the way back home (this week) we stopped in Asheville NC for a couple of days, and spent an afternoon in Hot Springs. From Asheville we hightailed it up to Buena Vista VA, and drove the Blue Ridge Parkway up through SNP. We stopped for a couple hours easy hike near…

Visiting niece and her family in MD. We spent the day in Harper's Ferry. Walked a tiny stretch of trail. Gorgeous weather, about 70 degrees out and sunny.

  • If you've lived at sea level most of your life, doing anything at all at 13,000 feet will have you seeing stars. My first (only?) experience of that sort of vertical-change was driving from Hilo to the top of Mauna Kea in a rental car. The car barely made it to the top. Carb was adjusted for seal level, natch. When I stepped outside at the summit to wander about, I was amazed how hard it was to just breathe properly.

I went skiing yesterday, it'll be the last day of skiing for a while as we're doing a little "snowbird" thing for a couple weeks. Anyway... halfway there, I remembered that my cheapo season pass wasn't going to cut it, since it was school vacation week. (The pass specifically excludes weekends and holidays.) So I get to the ticket office to inquire as to what it's going to cost to ski, and the price they quoted was way high. Walked away to think it over. Just too nice a day to miss. Went back at…

The reflection we see is exactly the light that doesn't make it to the cat's retina. So how does that help the cat? EDIT: Ok I looked it up. the reflec…

  • Quote from TrafficJam: “I haven't found evidence that designating new wilderness areas under the Wilderness Act will displace people. If anyone can cite sources, please let me know. ” I've said it before but in my opinion, one of the most valuable functions of the trail is simply conservation -- quite independent of any hiking that takes place on it. To me, simply designating a piece of land as "thou shalt not build a mall or housing development or office park here" is well worth the effort.
