  • Corona Virus and the Trail

I had something in March 2020. Whatever I had was not as bad as something I had in a previous year when I was winded after climbing into a top bunk, and had to rest and go slow walking up a small hill. My guess is I had pneumonia and then COVID. I doubt COVID would kill me, even without the vaccine and boosters I had. I wear a mask out of courtesy for others, not for my own safety.

My first hikes on the AT were at the DWG 30 years ago, but I never visited the visitor center. Those of us who have been there know which side has the flat land seen in the photo, and those who read AWOL's guide know which state the visitor center is in. The 2017 Version is next to my bed, but I did not cheat. Now if I could just figure out the difference between baseball thread and football thread. Maybe Kevlar vs. Dynema?

Quote from odd man out: “Quote from Astro: “Quote from WanderingStovie: “Or Fontana Dam to Mollies Ridge ” Sometimes it is nice to be south bound. ” reddit.com/r/lotr/comments/2io…south_feels_like_walking/ ” So how fast would I have to go to achieve weightlessness? Would I need space shuttle tiles for armor? How many calories per hour would I burn to overcome the air resistance? I went NOBO twice and SOBO once over this section. Yellowjackets got me the second time SOBO.

I think I have seen two porcupines in the last half century. One was on the AT.

  • If I want to be truly impure, there are the Bartram, Allegheny, and Tuscarora trails, which I have not seen.

  • Quote from odd man out: “If you invent it, you can name, plus have the FKT. ” I am probably not the first to do any of those things, but whatever combination I wind up doing may be unique. I refuse to nail down the details beforehand, which I believe a FKT would require.

  • I am considering a very impure nobo thruhike of the AT. I might take the Pinhoti, BMT, and Duncan Ridge trails from Dalton to Blood Mountain, hike into Helen from Unicoi Gap, return from Helen near Tray Mountain, take the Kimsey Creek shortcut, skip the eastern dip to the south in the Whites heading directly to Gorham on a side trail, and so on. I would not get a hang tag, not get a photo at Harpers Ferry, and not report 2000 miles to ATC.

At Rock Gap along the AT in NC, how do you spell the name of the trail leading to the poplar? Waslick, Wasilik, Wasalik, or all of these?
