I don't include the summit day in my calculation (that's not variable). It's the number of days hiking from the BSP campground to Monson that is unknown. It takes most of a day to get out of BSP, but include those miles in the calculation.

Plans for a Baxter Peak to Monson section are coming along. But how many days to plan for? From what I've read, 10 days from Katahdin Stream CG to Monson is a reasonable estimate for a SOBO section hiker. Would you plan on 11 days, just to be safe? This affects meal planning as well as lodging and transportation logistics at the end. I will probably use a food drop service so I don't have to carry it all food at the start.Everyone says the Abol Bridge Store should not be used for HMW supply but …

Quote from LIhikers: “Anybody know a good way to cut pages out of the book? I need the section from Georgia to West Viginia, which is the front half of the book. There's also a few pages at the very back that I'd like to keep too. If at all possible I'd like the front half to stay bound together. Any suggestions? ” get the pdf and print the pages you want?

I find it tough mentally to not be doing what I did for over 50 years. ” I only did it 38 years (43 if you count grad school) so it should be a breeze, right? And April 25 is also my birthday.

In Sunday's Lions game, Tampa Bay was down by 14 pts near the end of the game. They scored a TD with a few minutes to play. There has been much discussion of their decision to go for the 2 pt try rather than kick a PAT. I have seen people argue both sides, so I thought I would crunch the numbers (As I tend to do). The premise: You are down 14 points with a few minutes to play in regulation. The most likely positive outcome is to score a TD, get a defensive stop, and score another TD at the end o…

Quote from Sarcasmtheelf: “...While I'm not a believer in such things I will admit that it felt like a very, very weird place when I hiked through it some years ago... ” I too don't buy into most of this lore either. The only place I've ever been to that weirded me out in an unnatural way was an old cemetery in Skagway AK where they buried a lot of the people who died during the Yukon Gold Rush. I've been to lots of old cemeteries (often related to my wife's family history research), some with t…

Quote from Astro: “I went up Hunt and down Abol. Personally would not want to go down down Hunt. ” I've heard that. Is that due to more scrambling on Hunt vs Abol? Scrambling up is easier. That's why I did the GC Hermit Loop counter clockwise. Do you road walk back to KS campground from the Abol Trailhead or camp at Abol?

I have been revisiting my idea of a BSP/HMW hike in late July/early August. I had a Q about permits. The BSP web page says all AT hikers must get a permit in-person at the KS Campground and once the quota for the year has been used up, hikers must follow the same procedures as the general public. It says hikers self-declare as thru hikers (NOBO, SOBO, or Flip Flop), or section hikers. This is confusing since SOBO hikers (thru or section) have to follow the same procedures as the general public a…
