Thanks for sharing, Max. That's nuts! That reminds me of the bear in the movie Backcountry, how he kept coming back and was stalking the couple before he dragged one of them out of his tent. Whew. Bear spray is with me always...and cocked and ready the second I see one. If you're bored, here are my bear videos from the other day. The first one is the dad and can only really be seen once or twice in the 37 seconds from the tree he climbed. Sorry, the other two are longer but mama was stubborn. yo…

  • Ha! I had that same confusion in that section in April of 2015 when I was learning how to backpack before my thru. I asked the same question .

I saw 5 bears (including 3 tiny cubs) south of Unicoi Gap last Saturday. I took several video clips which look awesome on my phone, but they're all distorted and pixelated on youtube. Bummer. The first was likely "Dad" as he was fairly large. A simple "Boo!" scared him up a tree. 3/4 of a mile farther was mom who wasn't scared of anything. I hung out for about 5 minutes talking to her before she finally meandered off trail. Next thing I know, I see three tiny cubs climbing high into a nearby tre…

  • I've heard people say both ways, that yes, it is marked well and then others say it's not. Good to know! I watched a documentary on the PCT last night and I've got the bug!

  • Wow, I'm glad this turned out well for her and her pets. Getting lost in the wilderness is a fear of mine...one reason I don't want to thru-hike the BMT alone. Give me a well-marked trail or give me a partner.

Quote from Drybones: “Even the deer in SNP are not afraid of people, Quote from TrafficJam: “ ” ” No. No they are not. One of my favorite moments on (another) dreary day in the Shenandoahs. Only 40 seconds long. youtube.com/watch?v=N1tRE00RJ6E

  • Hugging is definitely a human thing, and yes, brings a little stress to our quadruped friends. However, they've learned (as all of their behavior has evolved to) that it pleases their humans and they're rewarded enough that, instinctually, they tolerate. If we are encouraged to go outside our comfort zones as humans, maybe it's good for our pups too.

Quote from sheepdog: “GSMNP has the scariest bears I've ever seen. Not afraid of people at all. They need a hunting season. One bears and on the tourons that feed the bears. ” Same in the Shenandoahs in my experience.

Found out today, he wasn't sleeping with his food, but he was sleeping with coconut scented sunscreen. That's some strong smelling stuff. The bear bit the man through his tent. Imagine how scary THAT would be! Guy is said to be ok, walked away, but of course, quite shaken.

Quote from mental note: “Ya know with all these threads I see HB's face...it's like he never left. ” Quote from LIhikers: “Actually I wish he hadn't left. I appreciated someone with a different point of view because it made me think outside my self constructed box. ” Same here. Hikerboy was a valuable asset to our cafe community. By the way, I remember days before cell phones when phones were rotary dial with loopy cords. I remember when portable house phones were the big thing. I remember days …

Just sucks. Poor guy. I met him in November at Standing Bear. He "found" me a Budweiser when they were claiming to be out of beer. Kind soul, much wisdom lost with him.

That was actually a journal entry I wrote to my high school sweetheart, ex-hubby...not to be sent, just to be vented. Life's so weird. I'm coming up on the end of my ATC gig and have no idea where to go next...work at the Hiker Hostel for $1000 month and barely break even? Find a "big girl" job again with benefits? Ugh. I haven't felt trapped like this in over a year. I do know it's going to be alright. Things always unwind themselves the way they should with or without my incessant worry.

My honest question is, how's life? Are you as happy on Mondays as you are on Fridays? Are you at peace? Completely free to shed disguises around those with whom you spend the most time? If so, that's all anyone could wish for. Congrats. I've become a helluva lot more relaxed and, honestly, learned what I really need to be happy and comfortable. Very little, actually. A one room bunkhouse in the mountains with a bathhouse 10 yards away. Relationships. Time with those I love. Music. Freedom to be …
