Quote from odd man out: “"Everybody's over this thing...... For the most part. They consider it to be a big city thing.... At least a few I talked to. " At the very instant I read this sentence in the post above, I oglanced as the news crawler at the bottom of my TV screen and it said "Rural hospitals being overrun with Covid cases." ” Aint no rural hospitals.....not real hospitals with emergency and ICU. One person i talked to..... Nearest hospital 2.5 hours away. Everybody has the air-med memb…

Anybody who chooses to sleep shoulder to shoulder with strangers in a shelter is either stupid or uninformed. ” Not going to disagree..... But the forest service and the park service have their responsibilities and such spelled out in 36 CFR. As…

Quote from IMScotty: “Have you thought about your hiking plans for 2021? I am growing increasingly concerned that I will be forced to chose between my desire to take a walk, and the official guidance of the ATC and PCT. While I understood and supported their request that long-distance hikes be terminated and postponed in 2020, I fear this stance will remain in place for some time to come. At the start of 2020 we did not fully understand the implications of this virus, we were not fully prepared …

Sierra and SEKI are full of awesome places with minimal traffic. But that's a double-edged sword. Often the trails are on Rocky ground that's durable..... And low traffic trails can disappear in places. One of complaints of some people are reaching top of a pass on a SEKI route......and spending an hour searching for trail down because it was obscure. The best part of JMT is SEKI, but it's more than that. It's a cross-section of the Sierra from Yosemite to seki and it changes dramatically along …

citizen-times.com/picture-gall…l&itm_content=ExploreMore Only solution now is a total ban on camping there. The social media idiots want to party there with crowds. Note, this isn't the drone pic that went around a few weeks earlier this is last week. It's a recurring thing now. Self perpetuating due to social media. the biggest problem, is that it's impossible for anybody to enjoy the place and get a scenic picture with all the f'ing tents in the way. So total camping ban is needed. Forever. Ju…

  • Winter is 4th season. It means cold temps, snowfalls, camping and hiking in fresh snow. Handling blowing snow and snow loads takes different shelters. 3 season to me, can be temps down to 10F, and involve camping/hiking on consolidated snow in spring. Days can be considerably warmer.....or not. Typically....mid wt down clothing, ~4oz down jackets, down pants, night temps to 10F , days in 20s, all are 3 season. 20F is a "summer" bag at high elevations. Imo, temps on southern AT are not too bad oc…

If hikers decide to ignore the closures and risk their health by sleeping shoulder to shoulder with strangers -- then what enforcement is practical?
