Pico Camp Shelter
IMScotty - - AT Specific
PostHere is a first person account of an incident at Pico Camp two years ago... dsrunners.com/2022/07/25/the-salt-incident/ Not sure if 'Salt' still frequents the area. Part of the problem may be that Pico has built more slope-side condos/ homes over the years and that may be bringing road access in closer to the camp. From a thru-hiker's perspective, I'm with Astro. Just a few more miles and you can be enjoying a night at the Inn at LT.

IMScotty - - Trip Report
PostAstro, I know what you mean about the toenail thing. I will never forget to do that again. I always trim them 2-3 days before the hike. That way there is a little time to heal. If cut too close to hike day then you run the risk of a cuticle infection. Trust me, I know. My most recent hike my feet came through like champs. It is my digestive system that causes all my problems now. S

PostHarpers Ferry is a great historic town. Worth going there separate from a hike to spend time exploring and enjoying the Ranger tours.

Quote from odd man out: “Chonkosaurus is breaking the Internet. The BBC newsfeed reports it was sighted by two kayakers with "thick Chicago accents", which makes me wonder how you pronounce chonkosaurus with a thick British accent. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…bd8fdffd0c09fcb5690924886 bbc.com/news/av/world-us-canada-65529029 ” I've seen some big ones, but this is a monster! He is busting out of his shell. 'I can only wonder what this thing has been eating,' one of the kayakers wrote on Twitte…

PostLooking forward to hearing what it is like.

This story is worth checking out for the quote from the little sister... boston.com/news/local-news/202…orest/?p1=hp_featurestack Townsend is a rural Massachusetts town. The town forest is big enough for the directionally challenged to spend some time in, but I have to think they would have been able to walk out on their own eventually.

Stecoah Gap Bridge

PostQuote from LIhikers: “Quote from IMScotty: “They need one of these at the Palisades Parkway NY as you approach Bear Mountain. ” The AT has been rerouted there so you no longer have to do a mad dash across the parkway. You get to cross over it on an existing road on an overpass. ” LIHikers, I thought this was considered a temporary reroute. I think it is outside the official corridor. Have you heard they are working to make it permanent?

Trail Days 2023
PostQuote from max.patch: “ To be honest if I lived in Damascus I'd probably leave town for the weekend. ” Similar feelings. Long ago I took a trip to New Orleans during the off-season. Loved it. So a few years later I went during Madi Gras. Never again

PostQuote from LIhikers: “Is anybody thinking of attending the AT Vista in Tennessee this coming August ? Kathy and I are talking about making the trip. ” You got me to look this up. Could be interesting. I do hope to be out on a PCT section hike about that time frame, so probably not for or me.

WV/MD in June
PostWintergreen, I will speak for Northern New England. Absolute yes to packing head nets in June from Massachusetts to Maine. It is not just mosquitoes, June is Black Fly season. Those little buggers can drive you crazy. Of course the severity depends on where you are. Deep forest and swampy areas are the worst. Up on the ridges, the wind keeps both black flies and mosquitos at bay. The Black Flies fade away after June, but the mosquitos can persist till the fall. I have not hiked the MidAtlantic s…

Ouch! boston.com/news/local-news/202…rescued-mount-kilburn-nh/ It is mud season in NH. Off trail for a bathroom break maybe? Slipped on the mud? That was unfortunate. Sounds like she will bounce back, but ouch again.

Nervous parents I would guess. People are use to constant communications now. When I hike I leave a detailed itinerary with my wife with an expected finish date and a separate 'alert authorities' date. She knows she will not hear from me on the hike. I give myself a big cushion for worst case scenarios. On a six day hike I may tell her not to worry until day eight.
