I use a rei traverse. Bought it on a really good sale a few years back. Otherwise I just use an Aqua Clip for a water bottle. I need a new daypack so I'll be watching this thread. But my first choice for my next one is the S2S Ultra Sil day pack.

  • I'll never go back to smart wool after using Darn Tough. I've been using DT for atleast 5 years now. This spring/summer I tried the Wright socks because of a hiking buddy nagging me about them. They were alright, but still prefer DT. My wife uses the thinner DT's and likes them. I haven't tried the thinner ones yet.

A new SOBO record was set last week of 4 days hours, minutes. It would take me one to just get out of the valley. Our plans are to do the first half in a couple of years from now. We are looking at 7-10 days for the first half. Gotta look for roses.

I don't put my pad in anything. I fold it flat and put it on top of my only waterproof bag that holds my sleeping bag, down jacket, and clothes. But I am using a padded cell for my misc and big baggies for my food.

  • Sorry to hear of your situation. Glad to hear you have a trip planned in the fall. Enjoy! Did they give you IM antibiotics? Which breathing treatment medicine are you on? I can't even begin to count how many times my daughter got pneumonia with her disorder. The biggest help was the injections that I gave her at home. ... Wishing you a very speedy recovery Grayblazer!

  • I'm glad to see prices coming down. I don't remember the cost of my MSR kettle I bought in the 90's. the mug was around $45. I told everyone in the family it only cost 20 so they wouldn't take me to the mental hospital. Now with prices going down its time to get my wife a mug.

I don't trust them as waterproof either. That's why I started using just one big waterproof bag this year. The 20L dry bag from west marine holds everything I need too, except it weighs 129g. But that is probably lighter than a bunch of s2s bags all in side of a trash bag that I used for years. ... I wonder how much cuben around 20L weighs.....

I would be interested in this if the group isn't too big. I've been wanting to do this trip for a while now. I think it is on the Backpacker site that they had a video of this hike. Or it was a fly over or something. .. Maybe I will go see if I can find it.

  • I went with the LHG Duo. I was flipping a coin with the TT Cloudburst. i did a quick search and couldn't find the specs of the Rainbox. I wonder if its made in the shape of a cube?

I use to use the S2S roll tops until this year. I was trying to cut down on using too many bags. So in the 20L bag I put my clothes, sleeping bag and down jacket. That is the only bag I use, except I do use a padded cell for my misc. The tarp/tent, sleeping mat and food go in loose. My food is in big baggies which at night goes into the stuff sack. i like the idea of using cuben to get my weight down more and to solve the problem of just a water resistant bag that I've used for years. .... My pa…

What is your favorite sauce pack to take hiking with you to add into meals? My favorite is Horsey sauce from Arby's. A couple of years ago I took a couple of packs with me and added it to my ramen and taters. Now I find myself using them all the time and especially in my chicken roll ups. 2nd favorite is the green sauce from Taco Bell.

Does anyone use waterproof stuff sacks? I've started using one, a 20L bag from West Marine. Are there any other bags to look at? I really don't need waterproof, I just want to use them. Heck, I don't even need them due to my pack being basically waterproof already. During a hike in the spring it rain hard for two days straight and not a single drop entered the pack. But I figured since I have the dry bag I might as well use it. I bought it for kayaking but will serve multiple purposes like hikin…

I've tried that brand and the Rosarita brand. I used them for cold meals with tortillas, cheese, and sauce. The first time I tried it I really liked it. The next couple of times I didn't. It might have helped if it had been heated. Since Im stove less maybe just start a fire and lay on a rock to heat up. But I do know that the one package of Rosarita that I have left has stayed in the cabinet for a couple of months now with no plans in the future of taking it with me on a hike.

If Im in my tent I always hang. I don't want mice or other critters chewing a hole in my tent. If im under one of my tarps I hang or sleep with my food. Last spring three of us hiked the FHT. The last night at Sassafrass we didn't hang. In the morning mumbles had a hole in his tent and his food bag. Underoo had a hole in his tent. I had a tarp, so no hole. But I did hear them scurrying by me all night. If you ever go to Cumberland Island, be prepared to fight off the armadillos. Back country on …

Hopefully no new pack in my future. I picked up an Arc Blast in the spring. Great pack and super light. .. Someone mentioned getting this pack with load lifters. I ordered mine this way. Let me say that they are not needed. Plus they are attached in the wrong spot. If they were attached to the cross bar, they might work, but not where they are attached now. Joe even tried to talk me out of them, but I didnt listen. I'll be cutting mine off today, if I remember to get it out. The other options I …
